Find of a Lifetime !

HI:
I am new to this forum but have been sorting for a lifetime. Used to sort wheats in college. Can you imagine all the copper I gave back in 1973-74?
Just wanted to share a find I made on March 25, 2011. This is also my departed Dad's birthday. He would have been 97 on this date.
This is a 1972-D Split Die Obverse. The strike on the reverse is just fine.
Just glad this penny was face up when I was hand sorting my copper.
Hope you enjoy.

Post mint. Found it in the wild in a $50 bag from the bank.

I meant the damage/error on it. Is that something that would have happened during mint production or some guy was messing with it in his garage?

Henry, lets get Joe Diamond on it! jk it might be obvious but this is not my area of knowledge

This is a real mint error. Saw a PCGS Slabbed one like it on Heritage Coin that sold in 2004. It wasn't in as good of condition.

I see one sold on heritage auctions ms-63 RB for 258.75. Cent1225's coin looks better than that.

It was listed as a struck through split die obverse, it looks like the same one as the OP's

It's worth what someone will pay for it apparently.

Now why would I want to take $70, when Thogey found one sold for $258.75 and said that one wasn't in as good of condition?
Offer would have to be at least that good.

Also, glad to hear all of you are enjoying seeing this find and will be looking for these, although, that may cut into the ones I find, but - Happy Hunting.

PS. Thogy: I like and agree with your quote at the bottom of your post.

Because its not verified by PCGS to even know if its a legit double die crack. $70 on an unverified coin that not a lot of people have heard of is a fair offer.

If you want to bring retail prices than you need to spend the money to get it verified by PCGS.

On a find like this, having the coin graded/verified by a third-party agency makes all the difference in who will be attracted to it... and in the possible sales price. Of course, if you aren't interested in selling it, there's no reason to spend the money for PCGS or some other company to encapsulate it. That is something to consider... I have lots of error coins that I haven't sent off to be graded because they weren't worth that extra expense, OR simply because I don't intend to sell them. For my own collection, putting it in a 2x2 is sufficient. But if I wanted to sell something like this, I would give SERIOUS consideration to that encapsulation.

Yes, it's a great find. If you don't get a good price for it, you should keep it for sentiment's sake.

Interesting, but is it really "the find of a lifetime"?

I always read this section but seldom respond as everyone's knowledge so far surpasses mine that not responding is wise. But...I ignored the unusual coin or dollar value. My eyes kept going to the fact that your departed father would have been "97" and your great find has the year 1"97'2. I would just like to say that your Dad must of had a great sense of humor and used that penny to say "Hi son" on his birthday. That penny is priceless!

So I asked Mike Diamond Past President of http://conecaonline.org
Hi Joe.

It's a well-known split die from this year. Several others are known with the same date and mintmark. This is the strongest of the lot. The swelling in the center may be an interior die break or an area where the die sunk in. It's hard to tell. Many of these cents were struck during a time when the split die was covered by a die cap. It looks like the die cap was present, but very thin, when this particular specimen was struck.

Cheers,

Mike

Thank you for this great insight. Had not thought of it in this way. Very touching.
