Happy Happy Joy Joy! Holiday Bank Bag Score!

Postby TheJonasCollegeFund » Mon Nov 21, 2011 10:57 pm

Stopped in at my regular "1" bag a week bank. And I get the FANTASTIC news. My bag bank is handling some of of the holiday change donated to the Salvation Army. Not sure if they do this in your neck of the woods, but around here we have them "bell-ringers" with a red donation bucket at most of the big local retail and grocery stores. I was told there are bringing in change daily. I scored 2 bags today! In the morning I'm going back to snag the nickel bag that's waiting for me.

Looks like copper numbers should be better that the usual 28%. I didn't see alot of wheats or canadians, either! But that's OK, I know they are in there! I did see one flattened penny with "Discover Ohio" on it. I, also, had to grab one handfull to see what was in there. And I get a very nice looking 1998 WAM!

Hey I was happy as heck to find this bank. I went to at least 50 to 75 different banks/branches with no luck in securing bags off of the coin machines. Each place said "NOOOOO!". Anyway, 1 bag a week was alot better than nothing or I mean dealing with the plastic or paper rolls. Much faster! :D

Now I'm up to 3 bags in 2 days! I stopped by to return their 2 canvas bags from their coin machine only to find out they had another one waiting for me! :D The deal I have from them is I can buy ALL of their coins but "no" partial bags. And if I catch them before they dump their canvas bag into the fancy plastic bag, I just need to return their canvas bags.

Best find from the first 2 bags was a 1909 philly cent. My third 1909 this year!

Just feels nice to have a steady stream of pennies for awhile. It's getting old asking for boxes at all of my local branch stops. They know me....what I want...and still ask me....."...a box of pennies....a whole box....well what are you going to do with them....?" OLD!

So you guys with easy pickings with getting bags......think about how it would be without that luxury. I love boxes but no box has ever given me 600+ wheats and 2 indian heads at one time....like a bag did.

Good for you. The only bank that will sell me bags is about 100 miles from my home. I swing by when I am out there for work, which doesn't happen often enough.

congrats -
its funny how some banks/branches do not want anything to do with selling bags off their counters.
when, other banks welcome the idea.
guess the variaty helps keep the search interesting.

Found one CU that sells me bags. After greasing the wheels with chocolates the branch manager made a couple of calls and now I get bags from all three branches of this credit union. I only get a box now when I'm a few $$$ short of filling a $15 or $50 FV bag for resale.

Congrats. I had a similar opportunity, but I had to turn it down. For some reason, all my funds had already gone into penny boxes
I did it. I've been crazy enough to sort through 10,000 rolls of pennies. Almost makes you think, "some people will do anything to build up a coin collection."

With all your cash tied up in unsorted bags of pennies there won't be any left for Christmas presents. You might have to settle for stuffing stockings with pennies.

Trying to finish the 7 bags I have currently. Been taking dumps back to the dump bank in $50 to $70 amounts. Looks like about $150 left to sort. Wheats are low, no indian heads, and guessing the copper percentage in the low to mid 20's. It's been fun so far. But Monday they will have MORE bags for me to go through!

17 bags sorted and zincs returned to my favorite dump bank. Just finished the next 2 bags that I picked up on Monday. And yesterday, Wednesday, they had 5 more for me. I only grabbed 3 for now. They are gonna hold 'em for me!

So, that's 19 down since the 3rd week in November...+3 more sitting on my table...and at least 5 or 6 waiting for me come Monday morning. I can't get to the dump bank or the bag bank til then.

MY EYES!

Wow, that's a lot of sorting. Sounds like a blast. Wish I had a source like that, and the time to go through all of it!

I'm happy with the copper percentages. But I was looking to find more wheats and older wheats. The wild indian, too! I've gone through a BUNCH of 82's looking for another DDO. The errors, besides a small handfull of 98 and 00 wams, are eluding me. Still having fun.
