I get about 1% US nickels in Canada, but in the US you'd be lucky to find 0.1% of any type of Canadians (unless you hug the border, or are in Florida) in the US just by the numbers.

1.85 Billion were produced, several were melted in WWII, Korean war, and starting 2003 as a final ARP melt. What is even more shocking is the absence of pre-1999 dimes and quarters. The last time I went for a box of cdn dimes, it was all 2000 and later (no pure nickel metal dimes, nevermind silver dimes)

I agree with you. To get more détails, just look at the tracking thread on .999 nickels: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=10709

So far : 354,000 nickels search of which 39,981 were .999 for a total of 11.3%.

Here is what someone needs to do for the good of the RC tribe: Get together 10 lbs of foreign Cupro-Nickel coins that can be legally scrapped/melted and see if you can get them sold at any scrap yard or refiner for a price that remotely reflects their true metal content. I have sold brass tokens for brass price and die-cast tokens for die-cast price, but not CuNi yet. I tried Canadian and British copper pennies one time and the guy was afraid to take them because "we can't melt pennies".

For nothyng is better than lyberte
For lyberte shold not be wel sold for alle the gold and syluer of all the world

I don't have any CuNi on hand, and it would take awhile to get that many '82-'99 Canada nickels saved aside. I never kept the post-'82 stuff separate from the post-'00 plated junk.

I'd be very interested in the results however.
