which nickels to hoard

Postby stonewallrabbitry » Wed Jul 20, 2011 12:22 pm

I started hoarding copper pennies a couple months ago, I would like to start keeping a few dollars of nickel each week. Are all the nickels the same? I know about war nickels but are all others the same as far as metal content/composition?

I agree with Double3. Keep them all while they're still worth keeping. I bet the metallic content of the nickel will change before the end of 2012 as the intrinsic value (plus the minting costs) is worth more than $0.05. Ni and Cu in recognizable form (courtesy of the US government) is instantly worth more than what you're paying. No negotiating necessary for price, just ask someone for 20 nickels for your $1 FRN. With those 20 nickels in your hand, you've already made a profit of 15-20% (dependent upon the price of nickel per pound).

Outstanding.

As the others said, keep them all. However, I've heard the pre-1960s sometimes sell for a slight premium so you may want to pull those out if you get the chance to sort. And, of course, pull any silver war nickels (1942 - 1945) that you find. They are usually a little darker because of their manganese content. It will make your day when you find your first one.

I'm like you and save a roll or two or five every week. I can't really afford to have too much cash tied up. But it adds up and every little bit helps! I'm sure you've seen the posts on the 2009's, worth pulling out if you find any. Also depending on where you are located, you may find Canadian nickels. I find one every three rolls or so. If they are before 1982, they are .999 nickel and worth about ten cents.

Thanks Theo! My budget is getting stretched, keeping ONLY the Pre-60's has helped me balance my desire to save Nickles with my budget available to do so!

It seems to me that the 2004 D Peace are kind of rare in the wild. I see some P's but very few D's. Anyone else experiencing this?

save all coins, period. Within a decade there will be no coins used in daily commerce.

To give the best coin in the world to hoard at face value is the Canadian nickel made of .999 Ni, those are the best of all nickels ever made in the entire world (except silver nickels). In addition the 2nd best coin to hoard also goes to Canada, because of the one cent piece made of .980 Cu, I hoard the crap out of both.

Basically, I am 33, and my entire lifes savings is in Canadian Ni five cent pieces, and Canadian Cu one cent pieces, all assembled at face value over the last 7 years. In the last 2 years, since I rarely buy from the bank and hand sort, I have been buying from coin dealers at face value exchange for US.....In the last 2 years alone I have saved over $20,000.00 in face value of Canadian five cent & one cent pieces.

"No coins", probably.

"Save all"? No. Trade for more valuable.
