just went and got twenty dollars of nickels. came home and pulled out a 1942. thought I was good until I checked it out online that they made two different nickels in 42'. Nothing says Im new to CRH like getting excited over something that I thought was a score.

Hey man, I've done the EXACT same thing... nothing like finding a coin that could be worth something to find out later it's only worth FV...

I didn't know that until I had found at least 10 42's a few years ago. Only a couple were silver. Sad day for me.

Could be worse. You could have bid on a batch of '42 nickels on eBay expecting silver only to find out after you won that they were just the plain old copper-nickel variety exactly as described.

Yes it did. The auction title was "Half Roll Of 20 1942 P & D NickelsType I Before WWII in Circulated Condition". Not paying close enough attention, I bid on it like it was a half roll of war nickels. It didn't hurt too bad, It only cost me $5.74 with free shipping to get one dollar's worth of nickels.

Good thing everybody else was paying attention so it did not go out of control on the bidding.

I have a local jewelry/coin shop guy who always has one or two CuNi 1942's in with the War Nickels. I don't think he would knowingly sell one as silver, its just that he's as organized as a tornado.

Don't look at the dates. Look for the HUGE mint mark above Monticello on the reverse. That indicator is right 100% of the time.

I hate those 42's... nothing like jumping when you see the date only to get "the big let-down" when you flip it over..... blah!

The 1942d does have "some" numismatic value. Only 13.9 million struck. Thats less than the 2009 nicks that a lot of RC'ers collect.
