Hoarding boxes of unsearched Nickels – Newbie Question

Hi All,

I am new to this message board, but a rabid penny hoarder/metal lover friend of mine turned me onto this board. I was wondering about all the rumblings lately about either eliminating the nickel or at least changing the content.

I am not really a sorter or roll hunter like most of you probably are, I am usually on the other end buying from those who separate, but I was wondering what you think about just buying nickels for the metal content and sitting on them until the metal price goes up and the melting ban is lifted. It sure would be a pain to start only after steel examples were introduced into the stream. I only bring this up because I have thrown this out to friends/family who don’t collect coins or bullion and they think I am totally nuts to even suggest this, but I have a feeling this community will have a better handle on the situation.

Thanks in advance for the thoughts.

Hi there-

You're definitely in the right place. :)

I think nickels are by far the easiest thing to hoard (just buy a box and done)- you also have the joy of finding war nickels or buffalos. One thing to consider, however, is that each $100 box ties up $100 of your available investing income until some arbitrary day when the melt ban is lifted. I'm not saying it WONT happen, but there are other opportunities in other coin metals like copper, silver, gold, platinum, etc, and if you're sitting on $2K in nickels, that's a good amount of any of the other metals that you may be able to realize profits on, whereas you are 'stuck' with the nickels until melt day. Again, I'm not implying to anyone that holding nickels is a bum deal, but my solicited advice is not to make nickels the absolute bulk of your holdings. Diversity is key. But hell, if you like nickels go for it!

Im curious about this too so would love to hear other people's thoughts-

JMO, wags

i hoard nickels (i'm up to $1640 worth). the limited downside risk is a major plus.

here's an article making a good case for hoarding nickels.

I have 2 box's but now quit buying nickle boxes as i believe that they are like %40 silver,
As you struggle to 80% of melt an yet no problem getting Melt plus Ship for 90%
Yes when we get 40% for face getting only 75 or 80% when you sell is not a problem.

Look at Scrapman for the cost to convert your sterling an what ever for fresh minted .999 rounds he wants 7.15 Oz per round thats a 22% premium which i agree is fair as that includes Shipping.

Except that CuNi is a recognized alloy with many industrial uses. There is no need to get pure Ni or pure Cu out of the nickels.

I actually think he is onto something with the 20M nickels. Hoarding probably has a decreasing marginal cost so he will probably get a better ROI than us small timers. Bass is super rich, spending a million to him is probably like a few hundred bucks to most of us, and so it’s not like he is investing a majority of his wealth, but still encouraging.

I always plan to stack but, once I have a few boxes I just can't help myself and bust them open for the war/buff/V and the pre 60's... Normally I do 4-8 a week. The way I see it if I stack nickels they will be pre60's.... which are stacking fast...

+1 for the forced savings plan. Much harder and less tempting to take your coins to the bank, get cash...and them spend them. Not too mention...who wants to try and lift a 3 gallon jug full of nickels or pennies?
