Great Nickel Deal on Ebay, way below spot

Postby camtender » Mon Oct 01, 2012 5:36 pm

New eBay seller has 99% nickel for $7.00 a pound with $5.35 shipping. The shipping is a fixed cost, order 30 pounds and your cost per pound is $7.18.

All this assuming the product is .99 nickel............

Hmm... If you were to order some, how could you tell if it was really nickel, it could just as easily be stainless steel, no?

Specific gravity would be the easiest test. Other than that, there's XRF, hardness and (electro) chemical testing.

Microwaving one of the balls in salt water or h202 also comes to mind. If it's magnetic stainless you can make it rust if you try hard enough.

I bought the rest. I'll send some off to be tested. If it's not .999 nickel, I'm sure I'll get my money back from eBay.

Wow, great deal if that is real. Nice snag.

A good example why BUYING off eBay is a GOOD IDEA!

Total buyer protection makes taking a small leap totally worth it.

Its actually pretty tough to determine the difference between a Iron cored nickel and a pure nickel. IMO, its right up there with trying to determine the difference between a tungsten filled gold bar and a pure gold bar.

Density is your best bet, pure nickels are denser than iron nickels. Pure 4.54 gram nickels are 1.7 mm wide, the "iron cored" nickels are 1.76 mm wide and weigh only 3.95 grams.

I asked the seller for supporting documentation on the .999 lot, we will see what we get...............

Also, he had the price at $12 and one pound did sell about a month ago.

Don't think that qualifies as "way below spot." $8.25 + $4.65 ship for 0.52 pounds = $24.81 per pound, nearly three times the spot price.
