Gietner mentioned that Treasury is pushing a law that would allow them to change the composition of coins, mainly the penny and nickel. That is not really news but the fact that he's mentioning it in his testimony suggests its close to happening.

I heard that the last cupronik nickel came off the line today. Maybe a rumor. . . maybe not.

All these stories are making me think...
Such a contradiction: when it DOES happen, we will think "It's about time" but we STILL won't believe it's true!

I divert all my nickels into basement buckets. I'll snag a couple boxes every once in awhile when I have the cash, but couldn't tell you the last time I actually spent a nickel. At the rate of 20 per one fiat dollar, who could argue with that purchasing power?

I believe that for 2013, the cent and nickel become a casualty of the so-called fiscal cliff money grab. If that's not the case, then I'll likely turn a few bags back into circulation.

Until all is known about what's going to happen, I say "Stack to the max" with nickels. Minimal investment, maximum potential. Reminds me of the phase out of silver circulating coinage in the mid-1960s. (The lawns I used to mow then for $1.25 in silver coins {most saved] have paid off handsomely over the years.)

I also believe the change may finally occur as a cost saving measure directly resulting from the fiscal cliff. Also I believe all of this recent chatter has to be coming from somewhere. Usually even in rumor and myth there is some truth.

most fast food places a i go to will round you up or down to the nearest nickel, meaning they don't care about the pennies.

if they wait much longer, they will go straight to eliminating the nickel instead of changing its composition.

Here we are almost 7 years later and NOTHING has happened. So much for trying to predict our government and their actions.
