I just realized that there are two different Canadian Nickels that were minted after 1981.

One is a cupro-nickel and weighs 4.6 grams.
One is nickel plated steel and weighs 3.95 grams.

Does anyone out there separate the two coins?

Is it worth my time TO separate the two?

One is magnetic, the other not. Takes seconds to separate them with magnet - no biggie....

The CuNi canadian is lighter than a US nickel. There is no obvious market for the CuNi so they go back to the bank. ryedale can easily seperate the 3 kinds in two passes.

I always find those pesky 1949-1952 if I can remember Korean war Year nickels made out of steel. Keep an eye out on those as well

The Korean war nickels also have a blueish tint to them, and look 'flakey', so they're easy to spot. Plus, they stick 'harder' to a magnet.

My LCS now calls me anytime they get Canadian nickels in. I can get them at FV!

there is .999 Ni & there is CuNi........both are two totally different animals.

.999 Ni is pure nickel, whereas CuNi is copper-nickel,
otherwise known as mono-metal aka 75% Cu (copper), and 25% Ni (nickel)

you probably meant to say you got a few bucks worth of .999 Ni at face value, if so good job!

In either case, I think paying face value for CuNi is a great thing too. It is better than steel ones.

I have found a few of the .999 Canadian nickels in roll searches. I was lucky to find one from 1929 in excellent condition as well!
