What do you do with mutilated/damaged nickels?

Since I began sorting nickels, I have been setting aside all problem coins, such as ones with foreign substances (tar, glue, misc adhesives, etc) and those with significant physical damage . I have some that look like someone was practicing with shears, some with holes, some that have had a grinder used on them, many different types of damage. I'm sure you have all seen coins like that. I keep all my nickels, but these are bad news, I have maybe 200+ so far. Not a big deal actually. Sensible thing to do is dump these at my bank and just get fresh rolls.
I see that many of you also keep all nickels. Do you do anything special with coins like this? Just wondering.

I don't even keep most of my nickels (sort, keep pre-60, dump, and get more) and yet I feel compelled to keep these terrible coins so that I can ensure that they will meet the fire on the day of reckoning (melting day). I just feel bad letting them get back into circulation. The most rational thing to do is wash them off (or put the in a camp fire-that will burn off any sticky residue, and they won't melt) and dump them back at the bank. But I can understand if you feel you must keep them.

Don't take them to a good dump bank. I coinstar mine, and find various fun stuff to do with the really ugly ones.

You could send them to the mint. You need a lot more than you have to make it work. See

How many do you need? And how mutilated do they have to be?

I just put them in a airtight jar and bury them (bad pennies-not enough nickels to have to do that). I just remember where I put them. If I ever want them there just a shovel away and if I don't then... at least that's what I do. Probably a bad idea though.

Banknorth is usually collecting coin for various charitable organizations. I think it's good zen to donate them. And, if I wait until I have $5 worth, they'll give me a trendy TD green rubber wristband...which is nice to wear while magnet scraping
