So I called my dad and he said he found a nickel from the 1800s in his change. He then informs me he had it ready to go to the bank. I got him to take it out of the change that was going to the bank. I have to see what he has. He thinks its an 1861. What could it be?

I can totally understand people not realizing that coins from the 50s and 60s are valuable (for silver) but I don't get how anyone can not think a coin from the 1800s would be worth saving...

No nickels made in 1861. If it's a shield nickel-- an 1871 is about $63 G-4 condition and if it's an 1881 it's about $264 in G-4. Good Luck!!

No comment as I have mistakenly seen a glimpse of something dozens of times only to find out I was waaaay off. That's how I found a few 1943 coppers, only to double check with the loupe that they were 1934 wheats.

yeah one time i dug a 59 wheat. i was really excited all the way home. got home cleaned it up and got an expected dose of disappointment. dont remember what date it was but i know im not rich.
