From the Snopes.com article:

To pay off a billion dollars in nickels would require 20 billion of those coins. That amount would require Samsung to obtain the equivalent of all the nickels struck by the U.S. Mint in the last several decades. (In 2011, for example, the U.S. Mint produced less than one billion nickels, and 2010 less than half a billion.) Samsung would have to round up virtually every nickel in circulation to acquire over $1 billion worth of those coins, a feat that could hardly be accomplished without having a significant impact on the U.S. monetary system.

Does Adam have that many nickels laying around?

I don't know if there are that many in existance total.

Canada statistics, we produced 1.85 Billion pure .999 nickels. Thats only $93 million, assuming none were melted for WWII, Korea, and the alloy recovery program did not start ten years ago.

From what I can tell, there should be about $8 in nickels for each of 311 million US citizens.

I think they could have just gone to the mint and took everyone till they had a billion dollar, but I don't really know.

30 trucks would have only been $7.92 Million dollars.

I believe the post is a hoax!

The photo looks like a bunch of pennies to me, not nickels. This sounds like a hoax to me too. Gotta run, I think I just saw Bigfoot! :o

A quick calculation with US nickels would show this is ridiculous even if the nickels existed. $1b takes 20b nickels at 5 grams each, which then weigh 100 b grams. that's 100,000,000,000 grams. which is 100,000 metric tons. If the trucks were capable of say 40 tons each (that's generous) these would require 2500 truckloads. And we didn't even need a calculator.

Just looked at the snopes entry and they did the same calculation type with essentially the same result, though mine was easier. :)

You peeps in the US are afraid of tonnage.

100,000 tonnes is nothing in Canada, we sell 1 million tonnes of potash every three months, and 180,000 tonnes of oil everyday (1.3 million barrels)

We could ship that in one day easy on railcar.

I figured that this article must be fake. I could see Samsung making a payment in nickels, just to annoy apple. But 20 billion nickels?

That amount might even be too much for Adam Youngs! :o

Then again, I doubt it.....
