2013 Nickel Sorting Results

Hi everyone and Happy New Year. I wanted to share my 2013 nickel sorting results with the group and see how my results compared to members in other regions of the US. I currently live in SE Michigan, just outside of Detroit. Most of my nickel boxes were obtained in the metro Detroit area. I sorted a total of 60 Brinks boxes of nickels. From those 60 boxes, I found the following:
(2) V Nickels (.03 V nickels/box)
(19) Buffalo Nickels (.32 buffalo nickels/box)
(41) War Nickels. (.68 war nickels/box)

In addition, I managed to find at least one of every date of Jefferson nickels with the exception of the 1950D. My goal was to sort at least 1 box per week and to find at least 1 roll of war nickels. I just barely made the second goal but overachieved on the first. Good luck to my fellow sorters and please report your findings for 2013.

Nice results Franco, especially with the V's. I haven't found one yet. For your comparison here were my 2013 results -

$2720 sorted
6 Buffalo
115 38-42
22 War
89 46-49
112 50-55 (No 50D)
156 56-59
42 '09
16 CDN

I keep and stack the pre 60s. I am not sure what my goals this year are going to be but I may try to sort $100 week. This would put me on pace to find a roll of war nicks like you did. Not a bad idea. I came up 4 nickels shy of finishing a book in 2013 - 38S, 39D, 50D, 55. I will most likely order another book to start in 2014. Best wishes in the new year.

In 2013, I searched 172,000 nickels, or the equivalent of 86 boxes (although some were bags). I found everything other than 1943-D and 1944-S. I'm taking a break for a few months before I try to get those last 2. My totals for 2013:

48 2009-D
17 2009-P
79 war nickels
25 buffalo nickels
3 V nickels

I wanted to report out my 2014 nickel sort results. I ended up sorting 56 $100 boxes of nickels during the course of the year. I save all pre1960 nickels plus any V, Buffalo, 2009, and Canadian .999 nickels I find. I also separate and tube any Jefferson Nickels with a mintage under 20 million. I averaged 31 pre 1960 nickels per box. Here is my breakdown:

V Nickels - 1 found
Buffalo Nickels - 27
War Nickels - 44
Canadian .999 - 28
1938P - 10
1938D - 4
1942D - 3
1946S - 3
1948S - 5
1949S - 3
1950P - 5
1951S -5
1953S - 9
1955P - 2
1958P - 14
2009P - 19
2009D - 23

I also found the following proof nickel coins: 1960, 1977S, 1985S, 1987S, 2002S

I have been hand sorting for the last 3 years and have never found a 1950D in the wild yet!

I hope I haven't bored you.

Nothing boring at all and thanks for posting. I too am a nickel sorter and am looking for 38S, 39D, and 50D to finish my wild album. Keep up the search and best of luck.

I'm a little surprised you don't find more Canadian nickels in The Detroit area. Just curious, have you ever driven to Windsor to see if you can get many Canadian .999 nickels? Also, I wonder if rolls in Windsor would have many U.S. Nickels in them...

On that front, although I did not keep track, I would say that each box I did over the past three years contained on average 10-15 american nickels, with one box, having like six solid rolls. As for the pre-60s I did mention them in my count, but it was less than 1 per box on average. Finally, I only found one war nick and one dateless buff.

Thanks for posting your results it is always nice to compare to others....maybe you could edit the thread header to say "last years Nickel Sorting Results" so I don't think you are a year behind... ;)

Thanks for the nice comments, questions, and suggestions!

Regarding Canadian nickels, I probably find 30 per box. Most of them are post 1981 so I just re roll them. I have never tried getting nickels in Windsor and sorting them. I imagine there would be a fair amount of US in their rolls. Next time I go to the casino, I will stop and pick some up and let everyone know.

I have gone through 15k dollars worth of nickels and found at least 1 of every date except the 50D. I even found a 1928S buffalo this year
