Hi everyone. I decided to try a box of nickels for the first time. I bought rolls before and had ok luck. I usually buy pennies for the copper. Anyway back to the Nickel box. I got 44 pre 1960 coins,1 no date baffalo, and the best of all 4 Silver Coins.
1942P
1943P
1944D
1945P
So i think i am hooked on Nickels now! Also what is the average for finding silver coins in nickels.
Chris

it averages about 100 to a box so you are way below average..u need to step it up abit.

I've gotten only 0-1 silvers per box, but I do get a whole lot of pre-60s, so many I don't bother keeping them separate.

This has been asked before but I don't remember the answer. Is there a premium for pre-1960 nickels? I know about war nickels but what about the other ones?

I echo your WOW!!! Great find!

Look over in the tracking thread for the monthly Half dollars and other coins thread and you will see the posts of many that sort nickels there to get some idea as to what an average is for finding the war nickels. My luck lately has been to find the 1942 nickels that were minted before the change over to the war nickel composition that year. :(

Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. :geek:

I have seen some dealers at coin shows beginning to sell the pre-'60 nickels for a small premium. Probably as time passes this will increase, especially for those that are AU+ to an MS condition. I know a guy that likes to buy nickels that have a MAD so I keep my eye out for those as I sort but have not found any lately.

A plus side for searching nickels--because they are larger, they are kinder to my eyes and gentler to my fingers in handling them as I check for errors, etc. :D

Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. :geek:

I've just recently started going through Nickel boxes, to take a break from cents. The 2nd box netted me one silver war nickel, and one 1942 non-silver, along with a 1936 Buffalo. A 1941-S and 1975-S that are in fantastic shape. My pre 60s were in the 40s also on both boxes.
