This was a circulating commemorative coin celebrating the 200th anniversary of the isolation and naming of the element nickel. The Canadian five-cent coin at that time was normally made from 100% nickel, but in mid-year the commemorative coin was replaced with a chrome-plate steel coin of "regular" design because nickel was urgently needed to make armor plating for use in the Korean War.

If yours is pretty much rust and scratch free, then it's a good momento of the Korean War era.

I've also noticed they are pretty damm rare in circulation despite a large mintage. Guessing over the years everyone saved them since they were a "unique" design.

PART of the fun of this game. finding things you have never seen..

yes it will go into the 'save' jar of odd ball coins.

it was in good shape. no real wear.

Yes they are pretty rare. Found only one in over $6,000 FV of nickels. I also just found last nigh my first ''1945 V'' steel one.

Cheers,

I get an average of 22,4% nickel.

Found a 2000P MS-63 today, worth $4,00 in the book. Strangely my oldest nickel is a dateless buffalo. My oldest canadian one in 1933.

I forget where you said you were but I have to find a better city. My Ni percentage is now below 10%. What banks are you using?

Desjardins (they are everywhere in Québec). However not all the branches are equal. I try to find the ones where the population is older so I get a lot of CWRs. To get the maximum, I rotate between branches with my boxes. For example, I buy 200$ FV at one branch, I sort them, probably get 40-50$, I recomplete one box, and I go exchange it and another branck, theI sort again, then refill that same box with the other box that is not full and so on.

Cheers,
