What is your worst PM purchase?

Postby slickeast » Mon May 14, 2012 6:31 am

With silver in the red almost everyday people are reflecting on that recent bad buy.

What do you have that you feel you paid way too much for?

Me.... 2010 ATB 5oz rounds from the mint and a roll of ASE's I bought for $975.

Most of my silver was bought at under $20/oz so my DCA is helping to wash the salt out of the wounds

The hockey pucks for me as well. Forget the total cost per oz but it was way higher than anything else I have bought.

For me it would have to be several rolls of BU 1921 Morgan dollars that I bought from Apmex a couple years back. There are a few with decent strikes and luster, but many of them are bag-marked to death. They did include some VAMs though.

I've always bought pre-1964/ 90% fractionals, Morgan/Peace dollars and standard rolls of ASE's and CML's. I do not own one "numismatic bullion" coin. IMO, the term "numismatic bullion" is an oxymoron.

I bought in with some 40% and 90% last summer when it was at about $43. 30x face on the 90% and $116 per roll on the 40%. But it was only about $500 total.
Pennies: $4200 - (0) indians - (5)steel - (1) George V Canadian
Nickels: $6500 - (62)war - (23)buf - (1)V nic - (4) key date jeff's
Dimes: $5000 - (24)roos - (2)merc - (2)AgCAN
Halves: $8000 - (7)'64 - (33)40% - (1)walker

Every time I buy silver plummets, so every purchase has been bad. My last one was about 5 weeks ago. What has silver done since then?

Never made one. Sure I've paid way over spot before and sometimes I regret it for second but I have a long term outlook. Almost every PM purchase now, will in not long, be a great buy.

I make sure that I buy under spot. Sometimes when the LCS doesn't have any good deals, I've paid full retail for a few ASE's and Maples because I didn't want to go home empty handed. That always makes me feel a little like a chump. But I'm lucky so far, there's nothing in my collection that I look at and cringe.

Yepp those 2010- P 5 Oz hockey pucks from the mint still sit on my dresser in disgust. Silver gonna have to break into the 40's before I can get my money back.....sigh Man these things were hot when they first came out, not really sure why they fell off almost everyone's Radar/purchases???

They fell off the radar because they are a novelty item. Same goes for the ASE numismatic sets... they're pretty (epecially the proofs), they make millions of them, but in the end they're only worth what spot is at that moment. The same goes for all the fancy CML privy's, wildlife series and Australian Kooks. IMO, the premiums are much too high on these things. If you want something collectable, stick with rare numismatic coins. Most of the premiums you pay on them are justified.
