Metal detecting finds yesterday!

Postby corky569 » Thu Aug 30, 2012 7:18 pm

Went out to some new sidewalk strips yesterday. Was pretty slow, and HOT! I found a wheat or two, and then the Merc. Sweet!! About fifteen feet later I hit an 8-47 and thought, "that's a weird quarter." It sounded good so I dug it. after about 3 prys with my Lesche, I popped up a silver half!! Awesome, I figured it was a Franklin, or maybe a Walker, (Most of my finds have been in the '40s.) nope it was a BARBER!!!! My oldest and biggest silver to date!!!! I couldn't believe it! If you would've told me there was ANY half there, I wouldn't of believed you, but a Barber c'mon! I found the little silver ring a couple of blocks over, it rang 12-40, I thought it was a screw cap!

Personally, I would love to see a thread (or whatever they are called) on metal detecting. It sounds really interesting to me as a side hobby, but I know absolutely nothing about how to start, where to metal detect, equipment needed, etc., etc., etc. Would love to see something somewhere on this forum devoted to that.

That's a NICE half dollar! So sidewalks are a good place to detect? What is the reasoning for that? Just because people have been walking along the same path for decades? What are other good places to detect?

By sidewalk strip are you talking about the grass section between the sidewalk and the road? I never thought about detecting there.

That is a nice looking half for coming out of the ground. Great find!

Awesome finds! Congrats. :) I love mercs too; I just found a 1942 Merc today in some CWR dimes.

I have considered buying a metal detector myself, but wouldn't know where to start, what to buy and so on. Perhaps I should get on it and do some research.

Awesome finds. We call those "sidewalk strips" in NJ "tree lawns" I assume that are one in the same.

What type of machine are you using?

It must be a nice adrenaline rush when your eyes first lay sight on the Barber half. :)

It is insane. I put it in my pocket, and tried to keep hunting, but I had to go in my car to look at it!

Awesome find. I've just got into detecting myself. Looking forward to finding my first coins. I've found a lot of nails and a key so far. But like anything else im sure it takes some practice and a little bit of luck. Thanks for the post.
