Anyone know of this half dollar error?

Anyone know of this half dollar error?

Postby CardsNCoins » Sat Dec 18, 2010 12:13 am

Tonight while searching halves I found a 1979 half that was noticeably smaller than the other halves in the roll. It also weighed about 1 gram less. The edge still has a nice reed so it wasn't purposely made smaller.

I checked eBay and didn't see anything similar, so then I went to Google. The only thing I found was an article about half dollars that were struck on Susan B. Anthony planchets in 1979 and 1980 (maybe other years too). Here is that article:

Any light that can be shed on this would be greatly appreciated. Here is my small 1979 half dollar:

My Red Book says the half should weigh 11.34 grams and the Susan B Anthony dollar would weigh 8.1 grams. In the back it says that the Kennedy on SBA planchet is very rare... Inconclusive, but maybe that info will help.

Looks alot thicker than the other half next to it.
Can you measure its diameter and see how much smaller it is.
I found this link and maybe its from a wrong stock. http://www.coinworld.com/NewCollector/E ... nchet.aspx
Who knows, but most potiental error coins are not errors or worth much anyway.
Check its thickness with a Ike dollar, just a wild quess, but maybe leftover stock ment for ikes which were replaced with SBA in 1979.
