The Footlocker

Last Saturday, I flew to Tucson to be with my mother, my father was very ill and he passed away on Monday. Before he passed, he told me on his deathbed, about his silver stash, hidden in an old footlocker, in the shed next to his house. He wanted me to have it.

After digging thought a hoard of miscellaneous and piles of empty boxes, I found and opened the footlocker:

It holds quite a few coins, some in very good condition. I opened the penny collection book, and yes, there is a 1909 VDB.

I will be in Tucson for about 10 more days helping Mom clear, clean and sell 50 years of collectables, then fly home and drive back with the pickup truck. Mom is going to move in to the unit attached to my house.

Sorry to be a tease, but I will not be able to catalog the coins that will be for sale until Mom is settled in Twin Falls, about a month. All the non-silver numismatic coins will be for sale, I'll keep the silver until spot goes back up again, and maybe longer.

Thank you to all for your kind words. He was not in good health for a while so we knew this was in the cards.

I looked through the stash and found a few $1 Silver Certificates, lots of 90% & 40% Kens, a few Franklins, and 100s of silver dimes; many are BU. There are quite a few war nicks in tubes, plus about 13 of them on a printed card, one of each year & mint.

There is also a notebook with foreign coins from the countries we visited when he was stationed in Germany in the mid-60s for 3 years. Many of those are silver.

There are many tubes of BU pennies, he must have unwrapped them and put them in the tubes.

I am sorry to hear of your loss, IC. I am glad you are taking Mom home with you. That was a wild place to stash his coins, but it worked!

Always hard losing a member of the family. Your father was very wise to catalog such a collection, and now it passes on to you!

I put the Ag & Au coins in a briefcase, and in my carry on bag. I just went through security at Tucson Int'l. The lady at the scanner asked if they were all coins, and another TSA guy rubbed a chemical pickup swab on the handle of the briefcase and tested it in a machine, then he poked around inside the briefcase just a little, and said I was good to go.

The security check went better than I expected.

Your dad must have felt proud and at peace knowing all his years of collecting came to a final resolution passing them on to you. I can't think of any better end to life long collecting adventure. Sorry for your loss of your dad.

Thank you for everyone's kind words and condolences. Mom is doing well and will move into the apartment attached to my house at the end of the month. She is 86 and in fairly good health, but I'm glad that she will be nearby so I can keep an eye on her and help her out.

IC, I just saw this thread. I hope you and your mom are doing well and will let the good memories of your dad console you. Your father was obviously planning ahead. A good trait he's passed on to you.

thinking about you right now, asking God that He comfort your heart and mothers heart as well....i'm not just "saying" that to you. i'm believing that God WILL comfort your heart. I think of the joy your Daddy must of felt when he revealed to you the Footlocker, because i'm a Daddy too....and my Boomey boy knows of the stack, he knows the WHY of the stack....he knows of the "lead" stack, and the "WHY" of that too.

so I KNOW that Dad telling you that, must of brought him comfort, and now, I pray you see thru the mist of grief, and be comforted in a way that transcends ALL human reasoning.....that's my prayer right now for you and your mother, God love you both....and He does! affectionately, neil
