Why do 2014 eaglets cost $30 more?

Ampex's page for eaglets:

http://www.apmex.com/category/11104/1-10-oz-gold-eagles

Lists 2014 eaglets at $30 more than 2016. Also, 2012 are the same high price.

I can see some increase in price for older issues, but $30 more seems excessive. Is something in play here that is unusual?

The better question may be why are 2010s (with a lower mintage) cheaper than 2014s? (I don't follow numi stuff but perhaps there were some errors in 2014 and maybe 2012 that make searching for them worthwhile, which weren't present in 2010.)

But generally the >2 year old coins go up in price due to numi collectors and (with exceptions) have price trends roughly related to their mintage.

I think it's just a marketing gimmick. Gold is gold when it comes time for US to sell... but APMEX has a large enough inventory that they can cater to collector's
by selling them by the year... or even mythologize their worth by creating an impression of value where none exists. Not saying they are intentionally trying to
dupe buyers, but if there are some silly enough to spend more for past years then new ones, who are they to complain.

They certainly will not pay YOU more for specific years, they'll offer nothing more than their going rate... which should tell you something.

Marketing ploy, pure and simple.

Unless you have money to burn, use silver in place of gold fractionals. You can obtain much more for your money buying larger pieces... many times at melt. Want my
opinion? Again... gold is gold. Once gold skyrockets in price, individuals will be doing anything to obtain any form of it. Buy the currently unpopular commemorative
series and you can sometimes find them below melt value. Some of them are very attractive... and hey, they're still 1/4 oz (on 1/2 oz) of gold. 8-)

Another option is just buy 1/10 generic rounds from someplace like MPM. They've been pretty consistant at the gold spot + $9-$11 range for their gold rounds the past few years. Also free shipping for any order over $100. I buy from them several times a year.

Can you share what is a typical generic? Which mint or names are on them? Ever got anything really cool?
Thanks!

I've only bought this one style of gold rounds from Monarch Precious Metals.

Id guess they themselves just have less of that year and lots of people who ask for specific years so do silly things to up their margins a bit. Since no one seems to have heard of any numi related reasons.
