Cleaning Silver Bars ??

Postby IdahoCopper » Wed Nov 29, 2017 10:43 am

I sold bars at a coin shop last weekend. He picked through the pile and rejected all the toned bars. Said they were ugly and his customers wouldn't want them.

What is the consensus on cleaning them?

I would use the hot water, aluminium foil, and baking soda trick to take off the tarnish.

Comments? Suggestions?

I can just imagine PCGS/NGC getting into slabbing silver bars. You send one in and it comes back marked "Genuine- Improperly Cleaned." Now that would blow me away! :)
Former stock broker w/ ~20 yrs. at one company. Spoke with 100k+ people and traded a lot (long, short, options, margin, extended hours, etc.).

Please note that ANY stocks I discuss, no matter how compelling, carry risk- sometimes substantial. If not prepared to buy it multiple times in modest amounts without going overboard (assuming nothing really wrong with the company), you need to learn more about the market and managing risk. Also, please research covered calls (options) as well.

If you want a more consistent appearance with less work and don't mind spending 5-6 bucks, go with tarn-x, available on your local cleaning supplies aisle.
