Is it 5%, 25%, 65%...all in? I guess what I'm asking is "Given your situation right now, and what you believe lies ahead for our country, how much of your savings should YOU personally have in precious metals?"
My target is between 20-25%. The rest, right now, is in cash and US Savings Bonds.
Care to explain why you choose to have such a high % of those 2 holding? Especially bonds....
I am about 90% in precious and base metals.
I figured I'd have some 'splaining to do
I am 25% gold because it gets me away from the dollar (though not totally), and it has a proven track record of preserving wealth. The cash part I have is about 10% of my savings because the dollar is still the currency of the realm, and my wife and I are in the lower end of the income bracket--should an emergency occur, I don't want to have to sell my gold, possibly at a loss, if I don't have to. And,these days, 5K in cash can be gone in a flash. The bonds are just over half my savings right now, and I chose savings bonds as opposed to bond funds because I have control over what bonds are purchased and I pay nothing to buy them, because they come straight from the treasury. They're paying 4.6% right now, which is better than anything you'll find at any bank. I also don't think we're facing outright default. If given the choice between taking back spending promises made to citizens and defaulting on our bonds, if I'm advising the President my recommendation is crystal...DON'T DEFAULT! I'm not a madmax guy, either--America won't end, but it will be different in terms of our expectations about our standard of living. Eventually, I'll get to where I'm even between stocks and bonds. PM's will always be 1/4 of my savings and cash I think will be 10%.
Also, I have to say that if we experience hyperinflation or massive deflation, those situations are temporary--they don't last forever. I hear doom scenarios every day, but nothing about what happens after, and there will be an after.
