So I buy any silver I can get my grubby hands on at less than spot. A local antique store holds back all the silver that comes through the door for me and I stop by every week or two and buy it. This was in a 2 week lot of “garbage silver” that had other yucky, bent, and holed coins. I just counted face and paid the man 20:1. We were both happy. A day passes with this lot and the others setting on my desk before I bust open my loupe to have a look see for items of numismatic interest. I see the 1916 and think before I flip it over, “oh boy, come on baby”. Sure enough, like a scratch off lottery ticket, this corroded turd instantly became worth more than the $2 I paid for it. Damn shame it looks as it does. Although, I never would have got it if it was a grade nicer than this almost poor condition.
1916-D may not be in the wild; but not all have been domesticated out of the junk lots.
