I am somewhat new to checking half dollar rolls. Which dates from 1970 to present can be collected and sold for a premium above face value if any Not including proofs or errors?

There must be some dates because people are selling them here for above spot. I bought some (2005 to 2011) for 75 cents each. Better than paying twice that at the LCS.

I was under the impression that a 1986 P might carry a premium to face value, Am I wrong?

The 40% 1976-S half was minted as a circulation strike (also as proofs too).

NIFCs 2002 to date halves may sell for a small premium if they are in BU rolls. Other Clad dates really don't have much value, except for a collector putting together a Kennedy set.

Try and sell some to a dealer and find out what they are worth. :?

when you are looking to buy then there is a premium....when you are selling there is always a discount...

S mintmark is the easiest. Also most unless completely worn down will have frosted devices.

After 1964, look for half dollars with an "S" mintmark. With the exception of the 40%ers (1968-S, 1969-S, and 1976-S), most of these will be Clad Proofs, but you may get one of the nice 90%ers if you are lucky! :)

If you only edge check your rolls, the rims should be wider and almost always nice and shiny. I always check the wide, shiny rims for proofs, even though I don't keep them.
The NIFC's almost always seem to been thinner than a normal half and shiny as well. Just my observations. :)

The 1987 carry a premium as well.

IMHO if it's not silver or an error, it's not worth keeping.

Just because a coin is NIFC, it doesn't mean it carries any additional value, especially once it becomes circulated.

I've probably thrown back more 1987s & 2002+ NIFCs than most people will ever find. Bottom line is that they are worth 50 cents.

I have sorted out 1983, 1987 and anything newer than 2003. I also pull out all the S mintmark. For a while I looked into the Cherrypickers guide and there are a few errors in the early 70's the problem is that there are so many to go thru... it wasn't feasable.

In my grey sheet, there is a section for BU rolls. It quotes the bid on a roll of BU 1986-P as $55.00 or $2.75 each. BU 1985-D is listed as $60.00 per roll and BU 1982-P is listed at $100.00 per roll. But, its like someone said, I doubt you will find a dealer to sell them to. That said, they may gain better than average appreciation over other coins....who knows?

The 1970 D is a 40% silver coin and is the key date for Kennedy halves.
