Not sure if it's just me but after looking at others I'm starting to think 2012 is the "year of the skunk"...

I just found a 1976 half that appears to be silver. Are some of the 1976 halfs 40% silver?

Been doing mostly cents, but out of...

$1000 Nickels
$800 Dimes

I've found... *Drum-Roll*...

Nothing.

The '76 S is 40%.

This is what I have been saying since I joined this forum.

It was very lucrative back in the 80's, 90's and okay in the early 2000's. After silver started taking off, I started to see many more skunk boxes. I stopped searching halves about 8 years ago.

It can be fun at times, but IMO going through 10 boxes of halves to get 2-5 40%ers is a complete waste of time and effort. Cu is worth the effort and time investment because it's still plentiful.

If you don't have enough 90% Au in your possession, buy more while it's still relatively cheap.

Last night, I found two War Nickels in one roll after the other. Of course, this got me excited so I hurry and finished the box -- didn't find anything more.

At least the dry spell is over for me. Hope everyone else gets a little silver rain soon too.

A bank branch had a $500 CWR dimes they wanted rid of. Figured why not, might be some good ones. Turns out there was only one (1) silver dime period.

Pretty bad year for me so far too. Even my nickels have been terrible. I have been getting tons of boxes that are about 90% 2011's. :x

I've stopped doing halves this year. All I get is BU-PU bright and shinys. It's absolutely a waste of time and effort in the Richmond, VA area to get half boxes. Local banks rarely have any loose halves too.

Now, I'm only doing pennies, nickels, and dimes (not much, but better than nothing).

Even db23 and CardsNCoins seem to slowing down in their half production.... :?

Hi Aev,

I will definitely agree with you that silver rates haven't been so good this year. I just posted something a similar post http://xxjobiiixx.blogspot.com/2012/02/coin-roll-hunting-blues.html. Nothing quite like having an entire night of roll hunting be skunked, and then compound that by multiple weeks without finds.

But that's what we go through to find those really nice hauls [or hope to get them  ].

Maybe it's because DB and CNC have taken all the silver out of circulation already. MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Something else to consider is that we're in tax refund season again. People will continue to hoard their change and won't cash in Grandpa's coin collection until they've finished spending their refunds.

When I went to the bank over the weekend, they didn't have very much in cents/nicks/dimes, so I grabbed 5 rolls of quarters for giggles.

Very first roll gave me a 1952. Giggity.

Talk to the Cummins repair guy who services the depot and he informed me the crew down there is setting aside halves for "a guy" who comes around and picks them up. My guess is they slip an order out for themselves.. I'm going to find that drop off bank... No wonder I've been through at least 50 boxes and NOTHING.. That explains it...
