I have a 1776-1976 S Half Dollar that looks and sounds like silver, like 90%

was there any made for sets or something ?

I don`t know much about it except that I bought it in Houston at a coin show, a long time ago, it is a proof coin.
I didn`t buy it in a set.

They made 40% versions of these.

I can't see the copper in any of my 40% halves. They have a silvery ring to em too.

sometimes the copper disguises itself as a white shiny metal so as to blend in with its peers.

Either that or get to work on it with a belt sander. You should be able to see the silver layer with a bit of "polishing."

AGCoinHunter, You're all wet. He'll just ruin a good sanding belt.

I would go with a bench grinder.

Specs on your 1976s silver Clad

Weight 11.5 Grams
Composition outer layers of .800 silver and .200 copper, bonded to inner core of .209 silver with .791 copper
Net Weight of .14792 oz. of pure silver.

Thats why you do not see the copper ring. the outer layer is 80% silver but the inner core is almost 80% copper.
