Silver - Time to Sell?

Postby HelloMeteor » Thu Nov 04, 2010 5:06 pm

After today's big jump, might it be a good idea to sell? It seems silver could be due for a big correction.

Some are saying this is the correction.

Otherwise, I'm torn between the "SELL SELL SELL!" and "Oh crud, better buy more before it hits $30!", so I think I'll just stick with the plan for now.

Just the opposite... The exponential rise is coming. When it happens, PM prices will go ballistic. I think I'll be on board for the ride of a lifetime. As the dollar is purposely demotinized by the FED, why not hold on for awhile longer? As the price rises, just watch the SHORT covering ensue by JPM and the other crooks who get margin calls. It has already begun, perhaps part of today's rapid rise in SILVER was due to SHORT covering. Maybe the FED will bail them out too.

Now, if you need the CASH. Do what you need to do. But, if you don't, this BULL market is just getting started.

Never sell large portions of your silver holding unless you have nothing to eat and you can't trade silver for food directly.

Silver barely started to increase in prices right now. Beside what are you going to hold instead of silver ? Fiat money ?

I think people should buy equipments first like water storage, solar panel, gun, food, ...
Then if you have money left and no time to get into preps you buy metal.
And you're never really going to sell them for money, when times come you just trade metal for whatever you need at that moment.

I think the only people for whom it will make sense to sell now are the really wealthy, the one who can afford large preps and big amount of metal. They can play the game with 5% or 10% of their total silver holding and surf the up and down trying to profit from it and make more metal in the end. Also the one who play it on paper (computer) can play the up and down with several transaction a day and win from that.

Silver, gold and others metal are here to protect your wealth on the long term, physical metal take time to deliver. It's something, i think, most people here do to get the less risk possible of loosing wealth, we aren't really in a time where i would advise to take any risk.

Are you willing to risk loosing the metal you own right now for fiat money in case of the value of money decrease and silver increase while you hold no silver during the few days or week of the transaction ? Fiat money can crash any time now and silver can get to the roof very quickly. I don't think, in the current world situation, it's a good time to play greedy, but play very safe instead. That's the main reason i buy metal in the first place.

Of course you should do your own research, don't rely on me for anything and take full responsibility for your own actions. But this is what i think.

"Is now a good time to sell?"...is completely dependent on why you own silver to begin with. If you fancy yourself a long-term investor who is still accumulating, then the answer would be a resounding NO. If you already have a large core position, go ahead and take some profits. Silver's just warming up....

Wasn't this the same question that was asked at $16, $20, and $24? If it exploded higher you'll kick yourself, and if it goes down, great opp to buy more. The beautiful thing about silver is it has a lot more room to run up than run down.

I think you make a good point. If you're going to be buying and selling, makes more sense to do that electronically, and that which you take delivery of is for holding forever, or nearly so.

Ask yourself if the long term silver fundamentals have changed recently? If not, and you are in for the long term then at least hold on to what you got.

Sometime soon I am going to try to sell all the stuff I do not care for (sterling, 40%, and some 90%.) Then try to buy back when I can get the same oz, but in 999.

Listen to the words, and enjoy the pretty ladies:

Gold and silver was money and will be money.

If you exchange gold and silver for fiat, then what are you going to do with that fiat? Do you want to be holding US Dollars or Gold and Silver? That is the most important thing to think about when you get that feeling to sell... what are you going to do with what you get back in trade?

I've been thinking about either finding a gun store that would take silver or selling the vast majority of mine lately to get a nice AR15 since I don't own a rifle. I probably would wait til around christmas though. I only have about 2500FRNs worth in silver/gold total value as of tonight. its a tough decision.

Here's my take on it...

What are the odds that sometime within the next two months the price of silver will be lower than it is now? Probably 95% or greater. But how long will it be lower, and how much lower will it go? I have no idea.

And what are the odds that 5 years from now the price of silver will be substantially higher than it is today? I'd say 100%.

I'm not smart enough to time the market - to get in and out - selling on the peaks and buying on the troughs. Instead, I take a few dollars every paycheck and buy junk silver and sock it away.

Man, this makes me feel a bit panicky. I haven't got nearly enough yet. :(

I want to have at least 500 ounces, preferably 2000, but i have about 35 I think...

Must sell more junk on eBay.

Is she singing in pig-latin at the end of the song?

I really respect UK silver buyers...levying a 17.5% VAT is an unconscionable crime against savers.

And the robbing bastards are raising VAT to 20% in January too. :(

This is why I often pick up used bullion such as Maria Theresia Thalers as i can often get them reasonably cheap on eBay.

You know there is an old story about some folks whom the British government were taxing to hard.

Verrry funny, Eric  Hey DS... how does the govt track your purchases off ebay (or in here) to apply the VAT? The honor system? As far as trying to time the market, guys... if you need to sell, then do it the same way you bought, in increments. Set yourself a limit, say ten ounces, that you will sell each month, regardless of the current price on that day.

if you have trouble sleeping at night, or have bills, then sell.

if not hold tight.

a good strategy with stock, especially volatile ones like miners, is when you get a double sell half to recover your investment, and then let the rest ride with a trailing stop. as it goes higher you tighten the stop on the theory that what goes up must come down.

but right now i agree with the others that silver is not overvalued yet, just catching up. 1400 gold divided by 50 is 28 for silver for what that's worth.
