Weird experience starting up a CU account

I took one of the kids down to start up a standard joint parent/child savings account at a local CU today, and after the teller took our information she said she'd be in touch to let me know if his membership is accepted.

I've already got a 5 figure account sitting there, and she was rude enough about it that I'm seriously considering walking into the CU president's office tomorrow to tell him I want to empty my account.

They hire college students and people off the street that can pass a criminal background check, oh, and CU are weird. I closed my account at RCU about 17 years ago, but kept the credit card and used it the whole time, well it was not until I called them to ask a question about my account did they say I HAD to open an account with them to have the credit card. So, a couple of months ago they sent me the application to re-open my account with them - 5 bucks required of course, I still have not sent it in.

I don't take much of anything anyone at banks and CU tell me seriously anymore, I just read the fine print, and say ok.

Most of which do not understand the banking system, which makes it even more scary. ;)

Probably because in reality they're just retail sales people. Once when a banker was explaining account fees to me i rolled my eyes. He said, "Hey, it's a business". Funny, i thought a bank was a business that made its money by loaning my money to others.

Credit unions have very strict membership requirements. The one I am Treasurer of can accept people who live or work within all but one township within the Indianapolis Marion County area. Some credit unions are more restrictive, and have to get government approval for all expansion.

I don't miss life in the city. At my bank ... the drive-up teller is the mother of my 12-year old son's girlfriend, the inside teller I usually go to was my older sister's best friend growing up, and the loan officer goes to the same church I do (he's seen me grow up from birth).

I almost forgot, she rode the same school bus that I did too.

This CU is that type of place. No branch offices or anything...and they're paying 5X more on savings accounts than the big CU. Unfortunately the head teller seems to have learned her customer service skills at the post office.

That sounds like she's bitter, a sad life.

As tempting as it was to yank my $$,$$$.$$ out of that CU, I think I'm going to give them another chance...with some strings attached. I haven't gotten into the sorting game very hard yet, but I'm planning to wander down there and have a no BS talk with the boss tomorrow to see if we can find a win-win compromise that makes money for both of us.

I'm thinking all of their Canadian, plus all of their pennies, dimes, and halves...and no more BS from the teller from hell. In return I'll let them choose what kind of account they want my money in, and throw some more FRNs at them if necessary. It'll be fun to see if he blinks. ;)
