Not far fetched at all. See this:

If it were introduced I bet there would be a large market. Maybe even worth a trip to stock up.

GROUP BUY!

i agree that 0.1 grams is laughable, but at least the swiss government is thinking about backing their currency with something real.

That's $5 US FRN right now. Seems like a realistic coin for circulation. I would jump all over this if the US would climb on board. I'd happily trade .1 gram and .2 gram coins rather than $5 and $10 paper.

0.1 gram = 0.003 215 074 656 9 ounce [troy] * 1582.5 pm fix 05-22-12, = $5.08 US

$ 5.08 = CHF 4.7911

5 francs for 4.79 francs worth of gold seems like a hell of a deal, esp with a face value of 5 francs.

It's a long shot better than the $20/$20 canadian mint deal where you get what 10 grams of silver? People seem pretty excited about that one...

I also like the idea of a real coin but, with so little gold in the coin it just doesn't make sense to me. I guess I just have to think about it a little more. After all, I think that is what copper and nickel is good for not gold/silver. If they want a real coin just go back to 90% silver and make $5/$20 silver coin(s). A real coin, not the polluted down wafer. I guess I just need to wrap my head around it a little more but, in the end we'll get what they give us so what does it matter. I'm still stacking... :?

This is nothing new. Check out the gold dinar and the silver dirham from the World Islamic Mint. Pay close attention to the Daniq (1/6 Dirham)
The world is starting to wake up to the dangers/fallacy of fiat currency.

They want a REAL valued coinage that can be valued low enough to be used for everyday small transactions.
