I never see much discussion on the topic although I know many here hold them. What do you guys think about Platinum and Palladium? When do you invest in it? How do you perceive it in relation to gold or silver? Do you think they are a good buy or bad buy at their current prices?

I think a good buy. Technology advances will put more presure on the markets for fuel cell development and catalyst uses, medical andindustrial etc etc. Very rare elements that are just found in miniscule amounts.

Wish I could afford some, lol.

Think they get kinda overlooked really. I'll be interested to see what some of "old hands" and silver bugs think.

As with Rhodium, if you want to invest in Pt and Pd, do it electronically. Physical is too much of a hassle and will burden your profits.
I do not study either, so I will not make a recommendation either way.

I got out of my palladium. here are my thoughts.

first, i got in palladium when it got low after 2008. i missed getting back in right away in gold and silver but pdm was slower to react so i got in at a good price.

palladium and plat are mostly used in electronics, esp. re: automobiles.

palladium can be substituted for many applications, not all.

so i like pdm instead of plat. plat also has a less reliable supply.

plat and pdm, like copper, are going to be tied to industrial demand. i ultimately concluded that they are unlike silver and gold in that they won't be the subject of big investment demand. they are worse than copper imho because they rely on an economic rebound in a particular sector - autos. copper is rising without that.

notwithstanding this, they may do well. there are rumors that russia had been unloading both onto the market and recently stopped. i dont' really know. i just know you cant get them at a substantial discount to melt like you can copper pennies and the reasons for holding them are very different than for gold and silver. you could call them riskier. really, just different.

I do not study either, so I will not make a recommendation either way on whether or not they should be bought or sold in any form.

EDITED: On account of semantics

another factor is i think it was in 2007 there was a huge disruption in plat supply from s. africa. as a result, many mfrs retooled to use pdm. i have read that the retooling is not easy so there is a lot of incentive to stick with pdm over plat.

I'm heavy into platinum now. It's a long term hold for me though.

I personally would do palladium if I was even going for a higher dollar metal. All because of China

I bought some platinum when the price was equal to gold. I tried to do an even trade, but it did not work that way because the premiums on platinum were enormous, and I know I will never recover that premium. Anyways, I am happy with what I have, but do not intend to buy more. I think I would dump at $2K. I have heard that palladium could replace platinum in some uses, and I would expect that to happen more at the $2k range.
