i saw this Ebay auction for...get this, a "RARE SEALED Morgan Silver Dollar CARSON CITY, NV Bank Roll (18) FULL STACK"

4 days out and its already at $1111.11, the sealer is a consignment seller with 100% positive feedback and he does go into depth, what this is, the sealed roll DOES look antique, and the coin at the end is in amazing shape, no toning, so it must have been curated properly....its near the end of the description, the seller says, the sealed roll ITSELF has value, and he wouldnt suggest opening it....i dont know, therefore, i wanted ya'll to look this listing over and give your opinion.

somebody has to have a lot of extra FRN's to even contemplate getting into something like this...personally there is NO WAY i would put 4 digits worth of FRN's towards an Ag buy and not peel that roll open, lol, i have trust issues, so lemme know what you think:

I think if the price stays under $1200, each coin will be less than $60 which in my opinion is a good price for unc Morgans and for the chance to get Carson City Morgans I think it is worth it. Now on the other hand, 18 coins could be 1921's and that roll only worth %600. Hard to tell what a person should do but if I had $1200 just laying around I would bid on it. Sure its a gamble but odds of getting a roll of CC's is higher than going to the casino and gambling that same $1200 for big jackpot. As far as opening that roll, its open the minute it hits my hands. If its full of Carson Citys, I want to know. Also, if it is from the 1890's or early 1900's there might be some Seated Liberties or Trade dollars in there. Anyway good luck.

No thanks, I definitely have those trust issues. No toning at all? CC's on the end but the one he opened only had the 2 CC's. No telling how many suckers are born in any given minute, or how many wolves are ready to fleece them.

I would buy one for $1200. But it looks like most of the rolls he sold was $3-$5k Even if they are legit old rolls that's too much of a gamble. Rare coins were still rare 90 years ago.

I remember seeing this type of thing on a coin forum. Someone looked into the Carson City Bank that was on the roll and it never existed. These are the same as the cent rolls with an indian head on the end made to look like they are some old shotgun roll, just on a higer level.

The flat Arrow fletchings and concave breast feathers are the markers.

In my non expert opinion it looks like its a loaded roll. The paper of the roll itself, looks very aged and weathered, but the edge coins show no toning? It still could be all CC coins though, who knows. Lots of eccentric collectors out there.

It's easy to age paper. A little coffee "wash" turns a nice white sheet of paper into "aged" parchment paper.

Umm yeah big issues here are, if a bank was taking in silver dollars and re-rolling them--as per his clues of various dates-- Most would be AU sliders from slight rubbing. Yes silver dollars were used vary raely back then but if your getting P,D,S,O mint coins mixed into the CC's at the "Carson city Bank" someone had it in their pocket for a while. Wonder how all those MS DMPL/PL coins got in there........ I'm no expert but I'm thininking the bank wouldn't roll together 15-20.00 back in the 1800's. For them to do that there would have to have been quite the demand for silver dollars running rampant and that was just not the case. Besides, if someone wanted a bunch, the bank most likely had to place an order from the Federal bank and they most likely received them in a bag.... Scam artist should be shot in at least one knee just on principles

These rolls are as fake as a $3 bill. How would a 100+ year old roll get that dirty without the coins on the ends getting any toning on them?

Haha, even funnier that she is from Nevada!

I knew this was BS from the second I saw the photo - you can tell right away (at least if you are under 30) that the font on the roll is computer printer generated, especially the word "Nevada" is in like Arial font or something like they weren't even trying. No bank in the 1800s would have two different fonts on the same coin roll and why would they write out the name of the state on there? Did they even have rolls like this back then?

Also, how is the roll so dirty and old but the coin is barely toned?

I will make one last comment on this: he claims a bank executive estate is selling these on consignment. Wouldn't they be smart enough to have someone like Sotheby's certify the authenticity of the rolls and sell them for top dollar, rather than having some guy on Ebay make shady listings with them? The listing is FULL of grammatical errors.

As Pawn Stars/Hardcore Pawn/Oddities/whatever show where things are sold proves (and to an extent, the Traveling Grifter Shows, Pawn Shops, and Fly-By-Night Precious Metal buyers), people are too eager and greedy to get a huge payday for little effort and work.

Plus Auction Houses take an ENORMOUS cut from the bid price. At the current price on the eBay auction, your typical high end auction house would take around 30% of the bid price as commission.
