Not exactly "metals", but I am posting here because it falls under the power that a "unsearched" coin roll can have on an eBayer's ability to open a wallet. I've been keeping an eye on these 70s paperwight of stacks of cash that will either "look" like a stack of 100 $1s or 5 stacks of 100 $1s, example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/500-One-1-Dolla ... 231ec9e235

For some reason, they consistantly go for the value of what the stack would be, $100+ or $500+. Nobody in their right mind would lucite a $100 or $500 stack of cash today, let alone 30 some years ago. I understand that maybe it has a "cool factor" worth perhaps $100, but would a larger one mean 5 times the cool? There isn't 5 times the cash in there. These used to be somewhat uncommon, word must be getting out because there is at least 1 auction going on for these at all times.

Am I missing something? Thoughts? Is anybody here bidding $500+ for 2 $1 FRNs on the ends of 498 pieces of paper in plastic? It would be cool to have one, but not $500 cool.

So if you bust it open and it's newspaper all the seller has to deal with is negative feedback?

It looks real but.. of course, why would anyone do that to five stacks of $1 bills. It is clearly a novelty item.

The seller is totally honest about the contents.

If I got it for as little as $50 for a "$500.00" roll, I'd probably bust it open just to see.

Based on my experience playing around with my lamination machine, once it is laminated it is impossible to undo it.

I don't know about lucite, but my guess is that the contents are NOT stable. You would likely destroy a lot of it in the process of opening it anyway.

I would bet 500 dollars that it is only the 2 dollars. People like believing fairy tales especially when they are telling them to themselves. Hence people getting suckered by buying stuff like this or "unsearched" rolls of coins.

I wonder if you could just deposit that at your bank as "damaged currency" and have them turn it in to the Fed for proper destruction and re-issue.

If you use the zoom/pan tool thing and run it across the top of the image you can clearly see the edge of the real dollar back up by another type of paper.

The $100 blocks will also go for more than $100. I've had great success in removing coins from lucite with liquid nitrogen, but I am guessing the lucite would get into the paper and you couldn't even separate the real $1 bills from the paper or whatever that is behind it. I am just itching to find one of these cheap at an estate sale or flea market or whatever, they would go on the 'bay in a heartbeat. $500+ for a $10 novelty item.

How do you encapsulate something in lucite, and what is the cost of the process?

I don't think you'll get $500 if you're honest about only putting two $1 bills into it.

Plus the kicker is the top note's serial number ends in 50. Every strap that comes from the BEP (which the blue wrappers indicate that these do) starts with a note ending in 01 and is sequential after that.
