Bad Omen

So I walk into the BOA and they let me into the teller area to drop off my four bags of halves and four of pennies. And... Rats! What do I see? Another four bags of halves already deposited, sitting on the floor next to where I'll place mine. Wonderful, someone else is checking halves in my area, in high volume, and even using the same dump bank branch that I do. Great. So that sets the tone for my sorting Monday. Six boxes, not surprisingly three skunks and only 8 40's in the others. Oh well, it was gonna happen eventually. Image

Just think positive; Maybe he will start to get all the skunk boxes so you can have the ones with silver in them :)

Cheer up, Beau!

They could be dumping at your pick-up bank!

You should think yourselves lucky that you guys have the opportunity to pull free silver out of circulation at all. Not only do I have to buy all my silver, but i have to pay bloody VAT on it too.

Is it impossible for one to find silver in the wild in the UK?

Yes, pretty much completely impossible. The last circulation silver was prior to 1971 when all of our coinage was changed as we switched from some random nonsense system over to decimal; thus the silver coins where removed from circulation.

The only hope of finding a silver coin in circulation now would be *if* someone was stupid enough to break up a silver proof or maundy set and spend them into circulation; but I don't see anyone doing that considering The Royal Mint are robbing thieveing bastards and overprice all of their direct-buy coinage.

A cursory glance at the price of a Brittania versus the price of an ASE or Maple confirms this.

I'd take the cheaper (and in my opinion more beautiful) ASE any day - same silver content after all! :)

The only opportunity to sort for metals here is 2p and 1p pieces which can still be found made of 97% copper.

To clarify on Devil Soundwave's point about silver-searching in the UK...

All circulating coin dimensions have changed since silver was discontinued in British coinage in 1947. Therefore, old silver coins are not able to hide among current coins in circulation, as they'd be the wrong diameter and weight.

There are only a few nations left on earth that have the same privileges and opportunities as the United States does to search circulating coinage for silver. Canada, Panama, and Switzerland come to mind.

I got one today too.....I took off early to cash a check at my normal bank. I asked as I always do if they have halfs.... the answer is always no. But this time the teller says ...... some guy comes in once a week and buys them all.

Yes, which was still in circulation until 1971 as per my post... ;)

I might have to start asking for the CWR's. I usually just order six boxes a week. :?
