I know its been mentioned before, but how do you tell if a 1976 half is a 40%? I have one with a questionable edge and sounds silver. If it is weight, what should it weigh at..... Thanks

The silver clads are supposed to be 0.16grams heavier. Wear shouldn’t be a problem because that year was never issued for circulation.

Yup.. The SILVER clads are heavier - 11.50 grams when new. The clads are 11.34 grams when new. The patina (looks like other 40%ers from the 1965-1970) and the SILVER ring sound marks the 40%ers. The 1976 40%ers are ALL 1976-S coins, and they can be circulation or proof strikes. The 1976-S Clads are ALL proofs. 1976 (no mint mark) and 1976-D are ALL clads.

Drop it on the table and you'll hear it if it's silver.
Compare it to the ring of another 40% er if you're not sure.

Ok, its a clad. Thats where I was confused, it was one of those tricky edges and looked like it had some patina on it but its something else I guess as the weight check reveals clad.
