$20 gaudens

I'm considering purchasing my first gaudens. I'm probably thinking I should buy one that's slabbed. I'm also thinking I should avoid eBay on such a purchase. Anyone have any thoughts? I'd like to have my first purchase memorable but not for the wrong reasons.

Stick with the most trusted sources. Numismatic coins like that are heavily counterfeited.

I have had hundreds of these go through my hands and have never encountered a counterfeit St. G
On the other hand $5 libs and Indians and $2.5 libs and indians, I have encountered 2-3 counterfeits of each and have had hundreds of them go through my hands as well.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Buy from a trusted source and you will be fine. (Not Ebay)

Buy it in PCGS or NGC plastic. MS-62-63 range

pcgs is the best slab, and a 62 or 63 is not likely to be counterfeited.

Grey sheet ask price for this week is
MS62 - $2000 - minus $25 for gold price drop
MS63 - $2020 - minus $25 for gold price drop
These are for common date Saints.
Good luck

Grey sheet spot price is compiled on tuesday or wednesday and then published with that spot price.
By friday, grey sheet price is usually no longer exactly accurate.

Today was the first counterfeit Saint I have encountered.
2 dealers at todays show would have bought it as good.
3 other dealers said it was no good.
The "no good" dealers had just encountered similar coins and had sent one to NGC and the other to PCGS, both coins came back from the graders as NOT AUTHENTIC

Did they find anything off about them, e.g. weight or dimensions?

Thanks for the helpful information guys. Much appreciated. I'll probably be making my purchase in the near future if everything goes as planned.

Btw I'm curious is anyone here serious about investing in gold for retirement?
