40% halves ?

Postby INTRINSICK » Thu Nov 22, 2012 12:25 am

Just wondering what you guys think is a fair price to pay for 40% kennedys. I have been buying 90% for a while from people and paying 1-2x under spot which i think is fair because its giving them more than my lcs pays and i get it cheaper than i would have to pay the lcs. But my lcs only offers .75-1.00 each which is giving them away imo... The last time i sold my findings from cr hunting i got 4x face at our yearly coin show...what is fair 'and honest' for both parties...

If your LCS is buying that low, they're not being fair or honest, so basing your decisions off of theirs won't make you honest either.

Using APMEX's buy price to set your own is a good rule of thumb.

I typically sell on here for about 93% spot shipped and I get buyers at that price. I usually figure 90% spot is what goes in my pocket after shipping. Does that sound right to everybody else?
Pennies: $4200 - (0) indians - (5)steel - (1) George V Canadian
Nickels: $6500 - (62)war - (23)buf - (1)V nic - (4) key date jeff's
Dimes: $5000 - (24)roos - (2)merc - (2)AgCAN
Halves: $8000 - (7)'64 - (33)40% - (1)walker

I just did the math, and APMEX is paying 93.5% not counting shipping.

Apmex buy prices are for $10,000 or more though. They discount their buy price if the transction is less than $10,000.

Call tonymat
He pays very high if you are selling them. Don't need over 10K to get the best deal either.
He is usually listed in the want to buy section.
Now accepting direct payments through Wells Fargo bank and TD bank.

So,i guess 4.44 to 4.58 each is fair? im jus lookin to buy em for long term. Not wanting to get hurt on the x face when i do sell... He has about $35 face. Its just that almost every time i have sold they have acted like its the black sheep of silver

Times face and percentage of spot change every day, so try not to get stuck on those. Its more important to just buy the dips and avoid loading up during the peaks.

If spot is considerably under the short and long term moving averages, I might buy some 40% above spot. If spot is well over the short and long term moving averages, I'd be looking for a big discount.

The rule of thumb I use is that if you can get them for less than Tonymat's or Bullion Direct's BUY price, then it would catch my interest when they were offered. Personally, when I'm looking to buy them, my buy range has been less than $90/roll.

Nothing wrong with buying 40%ers if you can get them cheaply. I hold them long term, I purchased some a couple years ago for less than $2 each.

+1 on what Country says.

About 10 years ago, I used to shun the 40%ers. They were offered at shows for $1.00 each, but I thought 90%ers were a better deal at $2.00 each!

Sounds like they were. I wish we could sell them now at half the price of 90% halves. That would be $6 apiece!

Then use those FRN's to purchase the 90%ers ! That would be a great way to stack some extra silver without costing me a penny, not even a zincoln :D

I'm not comfortable with paying any over 90% of spot, most of what I have bought I paid around 80% to 85%.

I don't know what TMAT is paying, but you can get $96.45/roll (less shipping and 1% fee) from Bullion Direct today. SPOT is $100.68/roll. So, it looks to be that you can sell them for 96% of spot right now. If you can buy them for significantly less, and you don't want to keep them, SELL them at $96.45. There are some on RealCent selling for less than $96.45 currently. :shh:

The thing about 40%ers is that they are only 40%ers. On the upside, you do better buying 90%. However, on the deflationary downside, they give back less than 90%. However, the best way to get 'em is roll searching. Roll searching in my area is OVER! But, that may not be the case for you'all...
