RCM sells gold coins struck 100 years ago

Struck 100 years ago, and sealed for more than 75 years in the vaults at the Bank of Canada, a rare collection of the first ever gold coins bearing a Canadian symbol have now returned home to the Royal Canadian Mint.

One century after having produced Canada's First Gold Coins, the Royal Canadian Mint make these coins available.

5$ coins
The reverse image centres on a shield bearing the Arms of the Dominion of Canada: Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. The shield is encircled by graceful maple boughs. The inscription "CANADA" is engraved above the shield, and the date of 1912, 1913 or 1914 and the face value is engraved below the shield. The obverse features the effigy of King George V, Canada's Sovereign at the time. Both sides of the coin are framed with a raised beaded circle.

...and the market for these coins collapses.

What a shame. I know some friends with spectacular MS 1914's that will probably be severely devalued by this "discovery".

so price-wise the Canadian mints prices do NOT appear to be severe under-cuts at least.

I don't think the mint held back enough to make a difference in the currently circulating ones. 29,300 of the three years in both $5 and $10 (much fewer $5)

Globally speaking, Canadian sovereigns (with the C) are pretty rare, these with the Canadian design are even rarer.

About the only gold sovereigns rarer are the South African Sovereigns from 1923 and 1924.

Its astounding how much more a Mint state 5-cent nickel from 1925 goes for compared to the almost completely unknown Canadian sovereigns.
