4,233,725 40% silver Kennedy half dollars

I posted a thread similar to this about dimes in another forum a while back and it seemed to inspire many of the members, so I thought I'd post this one here about halves.

4,233,725 40% silver Kennedy half dollars (1965 - 1969) would still be left in circulation if 99.5% of them have already been found and/or melted.

Four million, two hundred and thirty-three thousand, seven hundred and twenty five.

So when someone tells me "why are you searching for silver halves when 99.5% of them have been found/melted already," I'll say "great, then there are still 4.2 million left for me to find."

Now get after those halves.

Nick

I hear ya. And along with you, I aim to find every single one of them. Persistence is key and based on your regular stats (especially 2012), you're definitely persistent and have put a dent in those 4.2 million that are remaining. Me too. :)

There is still a bunch of silver floating around out there. I just wish a little more of it would make its way to my bank...

CnC, the awesome silver totals you report in the tracking threads helped motivate me to step up my roll hunting for silver halves in 2013. The $1,500 in rolls I rounded up on Saturday gave me 15 of those 40% silver halves. Now if only I can keep up that rate of 1 per $100 sorted. I could really put a dent in that 4,233,725 total.

1.116 per square miles in the United States using the number provided.

Subtract the 90 I got last month in one of my Silver Santa visits. Each stack came from a roll. Out of 22 rolls, 20 had silver in them.

Where does this info. come from?...Who states that 99.5% have been found and/or melted?

He's not saying that 99.5% has been found/melted. He's simply saying that even if 99.5% was found/melted, there would still be a huge amount out in circulation.

I'd say it's probably more than 99.5%, but yeah there is a lot left. Thankfully halves don't circulate, or there would be almost none left, like quarters. There's a decent amount of 90% left too!

Thank you DB.

For quarters it may be possible more than 99.5% have been found/melted, but not 40% halves.

This is the more accurate way to look at it. For every 1 square mile you search the average 40% you will get is 1.116.

Bet I could find more than 1.1 per square mile if I could detect in everyones front yards.... (probably not halves though, just quarters and dimes)

I found 17 of them in one $500 box last week, the previous 2 weeks, I found two per week. They are definitely out there. Although out of the two boxes I did last week one was a skunk and the other yielded 3.25 oz. of silver in halves, I am so due for a week of absolutely nothing, but like I always say, if I find anything, I'm happy.

I have a local bank that supplies one box per week. In two weeks I've found one lonely straggler...

I am sure there are a few under water.

4 million plus sounds like a lot, and it is, but you need to put things in perspective

330 mil (the population) / 4.233 mil = 1 per 78 people.

Keep that in perspective the next time you find half a dozen in a box...

No matter how many are "actually" left, the beauty is that it isn't a finite number. Collections are re-dumped back into the system all the time by widows that have just finished pile-driving their husbands into a grave that he is no doubt happy to be in.

True... the only way they really disappear is if they are melted... but I believe that may happen more often with 40%?

I wonder if the refine rate is higher for 40% which would likely mean that it isnt as cost effective unless you sell them by the TON :-)
