OHH AHH I certainly hope you know your trade dollars. The last time I bought one I dug into deep reasearch to make sure it was real. Make sure to get a accurate weight and then some pics posted I'm sure there are a few of us on here that can assess what we think its worth!!

An old collector friend once told me that any trade dollar WITHOUT a Chinese counterstamp is immediately suspect, since they were minted specifically for the purpose of trading in the Far East. And fakes have been around a long time, dating back at least to the 1930's from what I've read. I bought a handful of fakes for five bucks from a Manila street urchin a few years back, and every one of them had different die flaws.

Pull it out of the cardboard and weigh it (on a good scale). If you have a LCS near you, take it to them. Have them check it out for you and ask what they will offer you. That will give you a good idea as to its worth. I had someone from Craigs List, that wasn't a coin person, meet me with one and the weight was way off. He was genuinely surprised and said he was gonna hang it on the wall in his office. Also do the flip test. The one I seen did not pass the flip test either.

The only trade dollars I ever had, I bought off eBay in the late 90's... and they were fake. I could tell immediately upon taking them out of the package, just by the peculiar heft they had. The seam on the rim was kind of a giveaway too

So, what did you pay? And did you remove it yet from the holder?

I'm guessing you mean 1841 half dime or 1941 half dollar...?

The lettering on the back gives it away for being a fake.
