Poll about 40% silver halves

Suppose you're on the lookout for some silver. And suppose you are offered a decent amount of 40% silver halves. Let's say a couple rolls just came in at the local coin shop and the dealer is looking to resell them. Would you buy them? What if the price was significantly under full melt value? I thought this poll might shed some light on just how desired or undesired these coins are.

Cast your vote! And let's hear your opinions...

I'd have no hesitation to buy them around 85% of spot or less, because I know I could sell them here for at least 90%. If you're not interested in keeping them, there's nothing wrong with buying them just to flip.

I have been offered between 75% (cas)h and 85% (for trade) in my area. I recently traded a bunch at 85% and I thought that was fair. In my experience after fees and shipping you get around 85%+/- for 40% silver on ebay. At the same time you will pay 100% if you want to buy it off ebay in most cases.

I got a bunch from when silver was much cheaper so I would not buy now unless at discount of melt.

ebay has been absurd lately. i've been forced to bid 100% spot price for 40% halves and i'm still losing most auctions. people paying a buck or two over spot, INSANE.

it brings the final total down a lot.

Just goes to remind us that true "spot" is relative; it is whatever the market will pay at that given time.

I was in the 80-89% category, but that is my goal when I buy any silver.

The panic is starting to set in!

You know, I don't ever remember seeing 40% halves in any coin shop in my home town. Bet they ship them off to a smelter!

Agreed. I haven't bought anything since about 18.5x face, just paying down bills now. Besides, 40% takes up too much space in the Fortress of Solitude Image Also, am still finding a few free each week.

I'll take silver 40% if it's free while coin roll searching, but I'm conservative, so I won't buy it unless it's 70% of spot or less. Yeah, I know that's harsh...but it is what it is. I prefer 90%, followed by 1 oz rounds/bars of almost any kind.

To each his/her own, I suppose.

I buy the best deal from what is available at the time I wish to purchase and have bought 40% halves. I do not hold on to cash for long. At current prices all silver is likely cheap to future melt value. I believe the biggest long term bang for the buck is acquiring the maximum amount of silver. I do prefer government minted coins whose identity, value and silver content is easily recognizable by the general public and 40% silver halves meet this requirement more than a generic 0.999 pure 1 oz round.

I believe they are underrated as bullion. As the price of silver increases, these half dollars, which for the most part are usually in great condition, will be priced at spot. They are a nice way to hold silver as a smaller denomination in a recognizable form. A great SHTF coin as well! How many regular folk's could identify a mercury dime compared to one of these baby's!

IF I were to hold onto them, I would buy for 70%. Yet, If I know I can make a quick profit by reselling them I'd be prepared to pay more.

I will buy 40% if nothing else is available. A lot of times I will sell my 40% and take a little bit of a loss to convert it to 90%. I prefer 90% but lets face it when the [shucks] hits the fan it isn't gonna really matter what the % is in the coin as long as its silver. Additionally American coins are the most highly recognizable coins in the world. Its not that hard to unload them if you need to and people are more than willing to take 40% Kennedy's. I personally would much rather be holding 40% halves than FRN's, period.
