Junk silver or silver dollars. I can look up the melt value, but I'm not sure what sort of discount/premium I should expect...

Hi there,

It depends on where you are.

I would say that generally speaking dollar and 50 cents coins bring a little extra compared to the others.

I end up usually paying between -10% and +10% compared to spot price on average.

But right now my taxes are killing me....

Yes, especially the 50 cent pieces as they seem to be a little harder to find. I would avoid paying more than spot for Canadian dimes and quarters, which would a little more than 17 Xs face. Try this website.

Although melt value is about 18X face for the 80% coins, on Ebay it is difficult to buy dollars for less tha 21.5X shipped, really nice stuff is more.

Dollars sell at a premium to halves which sell at a premium to quarters and dimes. Would not pay more than melt for dimes and quarters.

Be careful of the 1967 quarters and dimes as they are a mix of 50% and 80% silver. The 1967 dollars and halves are 80%.

As the half dollars were not commonly circulated most of them show little wear.

I usually look at the Kitco buy price and if it's not more than maybe 7% above that I consider
that to be fair.

A 7% buy/sell spread is about as good as it gets on most silver. Of course you probably
can expect to pay more buying it in small lots of a few dollars worth.

Thanks for your answers. I'll try not to pay much over spot on the quarters and dimes. I want some variety, but I was also hoping they would a little cheaper than US coins vs spot. Well I don't know if my coin shop will even have them but we'll see.

We sell 80% for spot.

However, we sell dollars for more, as we have a great market for them.

I think if you are in the USA or Canada makes a big difference.

Where I live 80% is disliked and seems to go for less than spot in most cases. Heck I think people like 40% Halves more than 80% coinage in general where I live
