First 4 Boxes of Halves

I finally broke down and ordered 4 boxes of halves for my wife and kids to sift through. I've been focused on pennies with the Ryedale I bought in January.

They had some decent success and found 5 keepers (4 silver and a decent proof):

1963 D
1967
1967
1976 S
1979 S Proof

I joined the family for a bit and actually found the 1976 S. This was our first time doing this and I thought the 1976 S looked a bit odd so I tossed it to my son who figured out it was actually 40% silver. Kudos to my little numismatist!

I'm just glad they did so well given how I've read on the forum that many of you will go 5, 10 and even 20 boxes with nothing. Needless to say my kids are hooked are already asking me to order some more.

Congratulations finding a few silver in the boxes. Remember, don't get discouraged if you get skunked ever. It happens quite a bit, but there is still stuff to be found. Lol at your avatar. Scyther has the other guy from the copper heist as an avatar, lol.

Yep, I was warning the wife and kids that there was a good chance they would find nothing so they had that expectation going in. We were all surprised by the variety of things we found.

I am new and didn't have an avatar yet so when I saw the news about the big heist I posted a link to the article, grabbed a screen shot of one of the thieves and set that as my avatar. shinnosuke & Scyther both switched their avatars (using my image) for a bit of fun. I then switched mine to another one of the thieves to mix it up a bit. When I'm out picking up pennies with my son I find myself saying things like "we're going to hit the wells fargo next" so having a thief avatar seems appropriate.

Thanks for explaining the avatars! I noticed all three but hadn't kept up with detailed news the past two weeks. Was going to have to ask eventually if I didn't see an explanation. ;)

I did a reverse image search on the new avatars...

It came up with a picture of Michael Jackson, and another of Charles and Di.

I picked up another 2 boxes of halves today while out replenishing my penny supply. The first box was a skunk but the second was simply outstanding. It had 38 40%'ers and a presidential dollar coin! My wife and kids are totally addicted now which is great - they are less likely to make fun of my stack of pennies in the garage.

Excellent! Enjoy your fortune. Here it is so oversearched that I can't get a box from the armored service that isn't made up entirely of pre searched rolls

Ok...so sorry for the silly question but i thought silver was 1970 and older..... why the 1976s?? I am rather new to halves so sorry for the rookie question. Is there a thread with list of what ones to watch for? I did a search and couldnt find one. Thanks

I'm right there with you racandjjc... I was looking for a list to know what to search for as well and didn't find much as I jumped right into this.

I pulled the 1976s out because it looked a bit odd but my son was the one who figured it out it was actually 40% silver. He has a keen ear and could tell by the sound. I then found this list which confirmed his assumption:

I'm sure someone here more experienced that us can explain why they decided to do this with the 1976s and also post a link to a list of things to search for.

Most 1976s are NOT silver. I get like 50 per box at least. They're common as dirt. Only some special ones are, proofs I think.

It's great that the kids are involved also. Mine usually help me out about once a week. Some of the best conversations we have had has been over a box of halves. With a 17 year old daughter and soon to be 14 year old son, sitting down and talking with Dad usually one of their highest priorities.
