In the next couple weeks, I'll be buying a couple ozs. of gold, and just looking for opinions from the board. Which would you buy: Gold Phils or AGE's?

I don't currently own either.

Personally American Coins always make me smile given I love the place so much, but their is no denying that the Philharmoniker is a beautiful design. Thing is though, you get the same design on silver Phils, but different design between ASE and AGE so if you are destined for one these pair I say go with the US coin.

If you want other suggestions, my personal favourite choice would be 8 or 9 Gold Sovereigns, as you get greater liquidity down the line as prices go up, the chance to grab a range of dates, and the satisfaction of a nice little handful of coins.

Even better would be 17 or 18 half-sovs if you can stomach the premium. :)

I do like sovereigns....:) I have bought and sold them before and have never had an issue with recognition or liquidity. I don't buy gold in less than 1/4 oz. precisely because of the premiums attached. I might have to go hybrid and take 4 sovereigns and a Phil or AGE. Thanks for the suggestion!

I still marvel at just how small sovs and half sovs are for the price. All being well I should be getting my seventh half sov later this week. :D

I'd actually actively buy teeny gold like Dos peso if I was able to find a steady supply in London, I think they're ace.

All I meant by liquidity is for down the line. If we find ourselves at $6000 gold one day in a few years, it'll be a damn site easier to flog smaller fractional gold than it will full ounces. just my opinion mind.

Also, i like being able to hold them all in my hand and go *ching*. :D

Man, you'd think that considering tehe Chard website is so massive they'd have gotten to grips with a dynamic pricing structure by now - it's always out of date.

i would buy peso's by far most gold for your dollar, well recognized and known.

I know, sucks eh? TBH it was a total punt on a badly listed auction on eBay. I couldn't believe my luck as I won it for £6 ($11) and thought I'd had the win of the century.

Cue: underweight brass coin stage left. *doh!* :D

peso's are as counterfeited as any other coin really. If you're buying from a dealer or you end up learning enough to buy from a local seller (not sure how it is in the uk) you're usually in good shape. A 15.00 digital pocket scale is usually all you need. They are nice as they list the weight on the coin. A 50 peso is big chunk of gold. I usually stick to 20's, which list the weight also or less and non restrikes. Either way. A 20 peso would run you about 675.00 with spot at 1377.00, so clearly you get alot of gold with almost no premium attached. In this case you're paying about and 11.00 premium. Most dealers round my area buy them back at 98% of spot. IMO that is a good way to go considering you're buying physical and probably not flipping. Another way to go is with francs, same idea as peso, very low premium. Buy the metal, not the premium.

Yeah, I have my eye on some Francs next, or possibly ducats.

I just have to finish my current box of ten half sovereigns before I move to a different gold coin (I am a bit obsessive about getting everything in nice round tens so I can put them in nice cases to look at :? ).

I have yet to see any Mexican gold for sale in any coin shops over here, the only legit one I have ( a Dos Peso) I swiped on eBay. But European and South African gold is readily available here.

I drool over the krugerands in the coin shop window regularly have yet to raise the cash to buy a full ounce in one go.

1/10th AGE's..i've always thought that Gold is too compact a store of wealth in the ounce for trading in the future, but thats just me.

i stick with silver, 90%'s and ASE's, and i'm fond of copper lincolns and non-debased boxes of nickels, but thats just me. I'm American, and i trust our silver (or gold) currency.

in the future, when fiat is tp, i wouldnt even look at a foreign coin when trading...but again thats just me.

AGEs... they're more well known, especially here in America. And you'd also have an easier time selling them since they're more liquid.
