In your opinion what 90% coin design/series is best for investment upside. I go to a local coin shop, and I can pick out specific coins. What coin design do you think is best? And what denomination has the most upside?

A lot of people seem to prefer half dollars over other denominations. If choosing among them, I would think the Walker series has the most potential for numie increases in value, the Kennedy's the smallest. But Kennedy's are your best bet if you're stacking for bullion wt, so it depends upon your goal. You might also look at the Franklin series and keep an eye open for higher grade specimens of key dates and others with low mintage years.

My own other two favorites in 90%? Merc dimes and Standing Liberty quarters... although you don't see many of those around in decent condition. :shifty:

Absolutely agree--you can never go wrong collecting Walkers & Mercs in any grade. Their designs are simply beautiful and they take us back to the days of WWII and The Great Depression. When you mix beauty, history & silver together you have a winning combination.

I agree with my fellow Oregonian, Mr. P-picker. Standing Liberty quarters with strong dates, pre-1930 halfs, and pre-1930 merc's for melt are beautiful coins, with potential up-side. The Merc dimes often can be pulled out with higher grading. I would add to that list barbers of any denomination if they have strong dates and are not too worn.

Well, I've started stacking Kennedy 90% halves! I like the size of these and it's design as well.

My LCS lets me pick which ones I want, and for myself....I prefer 64's.

I love 1964 Kens and all dimes. A big bag of 90% dimes is a pretty sweet thing.

Realizing of course I have no expertise, no experience of value, nor training in the area but, I like Franklins. I think they are under the radar like nickels and comparatively a lower cost for a complete set than others. Where else is a contrarian mind going to other than where the herd is not?

I am also fond of dimes! I will be stacking them as well in the future.

I like Franklins and mercurys. Maybe not the best value but I also like Morgans, man they just feel like real money in my hand.

For pure investment purposes, the standard issue US90% Roosies and GeoWashes are the best bet for close to melt. Given a choice, however, my money would go to Mercs and Walkers. Most of the area LCSs in my realm don't pay a premium when buying US90% from the public, but do sell the good stuff for more.

The Mercs and Walkers would be ideal in a necessary barter situation, but the others look pretty much the same to the GDP (Generally Dumb Public). In a situation of immediate need, I don't want to waste time doing a side-by-side comparison/explanation of a silver GeoWash to a clad one.

Outstanding point!!

I like Morgans. I see Morgans that I can buy for $25.00 sell for $35.00 to $45.00 all the time. I don't see Mercs or Walkers selling for that much of a percentage over what I pay for them.

Time to check the prices on the slabbed FB rosies. Might be time to sell or soon maybe.

There is much truth in this. Morgan dollars are your best investment. Especially CC or BU coins.

Higher quality coins are nice if you are keeping them for your own collection. But from what I have seen around here lower quality coins also have good profit potential. I was at a coin auction on January first and I saw smooth, dinged up, no rim Morgans that you could barely read the date on, cull coins that you can buy at the LCS for $25.00 and maybe even less, sell for $45.00 But I walk away shaking my head at every auction I go to. Very seldom do I buy anything at an auction. I just hope that there are that many uninformed buyers that show up for the coin auctions my wife will have after I am gone.

I would say that it depends on how you're looking at the investment. If you are looking at it as investing primarily in silver, then Roosies and Washington quarters are probably best because the premium on them is lower, so you can get a little more silver for your buck. On the other hand, if you are investing for the numi value, Morgans would probably be the way to go. Personally, I like Walkers and Mercs - to me, they're somewhere in between. I also like Franklins and think they had some potential in the future. But who knows. Personally, I say buy what you like.

Morgan dollars, especially those with dates from the 1800's have a special "lure" about them that makes the general public pay more than their book value. Their size, beauty & history all combined with silver has and will always make them a winner with seasoned collectors and the general public as well. ;)

Many great points made above. I also like modern silver dollars. even the common ones are rather rare compared to many series but many times Ive bought lots of them with coins included with mintages of 20-100k for 1-3 bucks a coin over spot. If you ever see these for a bit over spot I dont see how you could go wrong.

Treetop, can you please clarify what you mean here. There are no modern silver dollars- the Peace dollar was last made in 1934. Also, your comment about buying coins with mintages of 20-100k confuses me. You can't be talking about silver American Eagles, which are modern but where none were minted in quantities less than 3 million.

So what (specifically) type of "modern silver dollar" are you talking about. Is this a foreign coin of some type or a U.S. coin?

I'm pretty sure he means the modern commemorative silver dollars, like these:
