Coin Shop Score!!

Postby jtlee321 » Sat Jan 15, 2011 2:18 am

I dropped by a coin shop this afternoon that happened to be across the street from one of my dump banks. I decided to take a glance through the Foreign Coin box. I asked how much are the foreign coins and was told $0.25 each. I had my daughter with me, so I did not have much time to spend. So here are my finds..

1963 French 5 Franc .835 Silver ASW 0.3222 oz. Cost only a US Quarter
1955 Netherlands 1 Gulden .720 Silver ASW 0.2315 oz. Cost only a US Quarter
2 Panamanian 1/10 Balboa's 1953 and 1962 each .900 Silver ASW 0.0723 oz. Cost only a US Quarter each.

Netted 0.6983 ounces of silver for a cost of $1.00.

I will be going back to this shop on Monday to try and find more!

many dealers are only interested in U.S. coins so there are some bargains to be had if you know what to look for. Nice score!

I will be back on Monday. I know it is a Holiday but he said he would still be open. I guess if I can't hunt halves I can hunt the foreign coins. At least until Tuesday when the banks open up. :-)

I'm still not sure how he or anyone else had missed the French 5 Franc? When I walked into the shop and saw the box of Foreign the 5 Franc nearly yelled at me to come pick it up. It is in AU condition and the sheen of silver was unmistakable. It is around the size of a Presidential Dollar but thicker. So I decided to dig a little more. Now to go back and do a lot more digging.

That is the exact book I use. I borrowed a copy from the library and was able to download a PDF version of the book to my computer. I still have a lot of studying to do.

My guess is he just bought them by the pound or paid a flat fee for someones collection and decided he could make a profit by selling each piece a quarter at a time.. If the money was there I could snag several of the .999 Canadian nickels. I saw several in the box.

Finally got back to the coin shop but someone cleaned them out of the foreign coins. They did have a small box with about ten coins in it to look through..

Here is what I picked up for a total of $1.00

1943 British One Shilling .500 Silver total of 0.0909 ounces
1926 British Half Penny
1945 British Large Penny
1963 British Large Penny
1904 Indian Head Penny!
