1949-S dime found... it pays to check sometimes

Earlier today I posted about only finding 2 silver dimes in 4 boxes. After edge searching for silver, I searched the clad by hand looking for ones to put in the album (still have 6 dates that I haven't found a good example of yet; almost done). After a while I heard the sound of silver. I saw a silver looking dime. Sure enough, it had an S on the back, which could only be silver. Turned it around and... 1949! Second lowest mintage in the series, and apparently considered the key date for whatever reason. If I can find this one, maybe it's possible to complete this set from circulation after all... 50 years after the last silver dimes were made :o . Not such a bad box after all.

49-s is the big boy of the rosies if there is such a thing. Low mintage but pretty much bullion but might starting to creep up the ladder a bit

I've heard anywhere from melt to $5. Mine is in decent condition, but not great. I'm guessing it's worth like 2 or 3 bucks. Some people say the 1950-D nickel isn't a "real" key date, but even that seems like a stopper compared to anything in the Roosevelt series. I guess the only long series that truly doesn't have one at all would be Lincoln memorial cents... and maybe Kennedy halves.

I don't want to sound cynical, but unless the roosevelts are in really great condition. The value shouldn't be that much above junk prices. There's far too many Au - Bu from that series to push the 'semi-key' dates up at this point.

Just my 2 cents.

Nice find nonetheless.
