Hey guys,
do you think hunting for silver halves will be easier here than in Goshen, NY? Transportation wise is not because I have to take the train to my bank because their is no parking.

A big city silver hunt... hmmm. You've got lots of banks to try, Father.

May not be easier because of no car, but you should still do it. I usually at least get a box of pennies when I travel. I stayed in a hotel right in times square not too long ago. I walked to a bank there and got a box of pennies and carried it in a back pack back to the hotel. Not as easy as walking to the parking lot and throwing it in the car, but still manageable. You just may not be able to do more than one box at a time.

One of our members here hunts NYC banks and does quite well. I'm pretty sure he is not carrying all of them 1/2 dollar boxes.

Nice I'm going to try it. I found a church near the bank where I can park lol. I like going to TD Bank. They seem to be friendlier when I ask for boxes of coins. I'll report on what I find.

Have you got the churches there eyeballing the coins from the collection plates? LOL

Make sure they have your number so you can go get them.

most of my priest friends think my hobby to too time consuming. I had two of my priest friends over the other day and I showed them my small stash of silver, copper and platinum. They were not impressed. I think most churches throw the coins into the wild. I regularly search the coins in my search. When I find something good I replace it at spot value. So far I took out a box of nickels and found 1 silver nickel. The good think is I still have about 50% of the box unsearched. I'm hoping to at least find one more silver coin.

I once bought 350 face of halves on ebay, that had been pulled from the collection plate and accumulated over decades. A new priest had taken over the duties at their church, and I guess he didnt think saving the silver was worthwhile or maybe had some project to fund I dunno.

NYC catholic churches probably receive a lot of foreign coins in the shrines and candle things, etc (sorry don't know the proper terminology). At least that would be my guess given how cosmopolitan it is.

We do. I found out our local bank turns our foreign stuff into usable USD.

Here are the results. A box of $100 Nickels yielded 1 silver war nickel, 1 buffalo nickel, a Canadian Nickel and an English Penny. The Canadian Nickel and Penny are going to be donated to my parish's funds. So I guess the results are about the same here as they were in Goshen, NY. The difference is it takes more effort to get to my pickup and dump banks. I only use TD banks. Maybe I can pickup at a local bank and drop at the TD bank. Maybe somebody else has coin counters?

Use TD as your dump bank. The ones with the penny arcades. Then you can use the TD branches without a penny arcade as a source bank, or better yet, use a different bank altogether as a source bank. I would not ask to buy coin at a dump bank. That will lead to you getting cut off.

Believe it or not, I got a 1959 quarter in change from Costco a few weeks ago....the cashier even stopped and looked at it before he gave it to me. He must have noticed that it looked different than everything else in the drawer. I had never seen a silver quarter in the wild...until then.

I posted on another thread. My friend threw one that I gave him into the wild in NYC. A further update I found a tdbank with parking about 10 minutes away. That will be my dump bank now I might just buy stuff at the local Capital One which is in walking distance. I'm sure TD Bank has good stuff. I saw some guys put like $800 in coins in the machine. It looked like they owened a grocery store. Who knows what those guys might have put in the machine.
