This is known as 'throwing a ridiculous price out there and seeing if you get a bite" method. The way some eBay buyers of precious metals throw their money around that round just might sell.

There are a host of ebay listings with starting or BIN prices at 1.5 to 3x what normal sell price would be. I'm not sure of the strategy but suppose they either use those listing to drive the market up and convince people to pay more for their other listings, and/or to drop in front of someone that doesn't know the market and decides to buy without price comparing.
