Melting of silver ASE's...

Does anyone know of anything regarding the melting of silver American Eagles? First, I'm not sure if they can legally be melted. But, I figured that with the price of silver running up so sharply in spring, 2011 there were certainly people with Eagles that they bought many years earlier at MUCH LOWER prices. Surely, you'd think some of them would have been tempted to sell when silver spiked so sharply.

Also, if you want to broaden the topic to gold eagles and Canadian Maples, that would be fine.

Can anyone share any stories about this or percentages that have been melted down which you've run across?

Yes they can be legally melted and Ive seen that done on video, but with the exception of "impaired" coins that are scratch and dent, that isnt the reasonable thing to do while they are carrying premiums and bulk generic is available for less.
