Happy New Year to everyone.

Work again was very busy this year, so the volume still isn't what it used to be.

In 2015 I searched $200 (8 boxes) in cents, $5,000 (10 boxes) in quarters, $17,000 (68 boxes) in dimes, and $103,000 (206 boxes) in halves. Here is what I was able to recover:

5,315 - Copper Cents
136 - Wheat Cents
1 - No date Indian Head Cent
2 - Silver Washington Quarters
8 - Mercury Dimes
97 - Silver Roosevelt Dimes
1 - 1909 Barber half
16 - Walking Liberty halves
27 - Franklin halves
52 - 1964 Kennedy halves
1 - 1992S Silver Half
1 - 1994S Silver Half
1 - 2003S Silver Half
1 - 2008S Silver Half
526 - 40% Kennedy halves

All the best to everyone for 2016.

Nick

Nice.

Can you please estimate the amount of hours to procure and search through all these boxes. Also gas money.

If I strike you as a man who estimates, then my answer would be wasted.

Great info. Thanks for sharing! I wonder why the recovery rate on silver quarters is so low? It seems to be that way for all of us roll searchers.

My assumption has always been because quarters circulate more than any other coin thanks to coin operated machines (washing, drying, vending, etc) plus it's easy for quickly providing the larger part of the change at fast food places etc. I know a couple of coin op merchants that say they used to cull silver from their machines regularly but seldom find much anymore. I'm sure the Laundro-mats, car washes, etc didn't miss out on that aspect of the business.

Nice totals! I would get into sorting boxes, but I just don't have the time. Some day I'll look back and regret not sorting more. I got two rolls of nickels at the bank last month, and pulled a '43.

Right on. The same point has been brought up here before. Quarters are heavily circulated, and because of their convenience and greater purchasing power fewer people have hoarded them over the last 50 years. They're also larger, making them easier to identify. Silver dimes and war nickels are easier to overlook, and halves see much less circulation.

My theory why quarters have such a small % of silver relative to dimes is this...

Dimes are so small that older people without the vision and hearing abilities of a twenty-year-old might not notice them. So even if you dropped a silver rime on a tabletop to listen for that familiar silver ring, it might not be that easy to hear since the coin is so small. The dates are hard for many to read without a magnifying glass, so silver dimes will continue to be spent. By the way, how many young coin collectors do you know of?

Dates on quarters are easy for many older people to see, so silver coins will seldom get into circulation.
